Learn Southern history from the 'residents' of this Victorian cemetery in the heart of Downtown Atlanta. Oakland Cemetery was established in 1850 as a public cemetery for Atlanta residents, travelers and paupers. It is the city's oldest landmark in continuous use and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Cemeteries of the day were social hubs and a gathering spot for the living, as well as burial places for those who have passed on. Victorian cemeteries were referred to as rural gardens and the forerunner of today's public parks. They were often the only green manicured location within the city and families routinely visited relatives on the weekends, tended gardens on the family plot and enjoyed picnics during their visit. To this day, Oakland Cemetery is one of the largest and most beautiful green spaces in Atlanta and hosts several popular special events throughout the year. Oakland is set on 48 acres with more than 70,000 'residents' from all walks of life. Originally African Americans were buried in segregated sections. Due to special consecration of their burial grounds, there is also a separate area for Jewish graves. There are approximately 7,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery, and a Potter's field for those who could not afford burial. A tour of Oakland is an intriguing history lesson of Atlanta and includes stories of wealth, power, fame and fortune, as well as segregation, anti-Semitism, war and paupers. Some of the city's most noteworthy residents are buried at Oakland including the great golfer Bobby Jones, "Gone with the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell, five governors, five Confederate generals, and 27 Atlanta mayors.

How to Get to Oakland: Oakland Cemetery is located at 248 Oakland Ave. SE, Atlanta, GA 30312. From I-75/85 take I-20 East and exit on 59A to Boulevard. Turn left, head north on Boulevard through two intersections, then turn left onto Memorial Drive. Follow Memorial Drive to Oakland Avenue, turn right, and the entrance to Oakland Cemetery is through the gates ahead about 300 feet on the right. MARTA: Oakland Cemetery is located on the East line near the King Memorial Station. Walk south on Grant Street. Turn left at the stop sign onto MLK Drive. Oakland is straight ahead. Parking: Parking inside the cemetery is limited (it was established before the automobile). There is a small parking lot and limited free street parking outside the gates. When to Visit: Oakland Cemetery is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. Oakland Cemetery is a wonderful and unique place to learn about Atlanta's history any time of year, but they also offer some interesting special events invoking the Victorian custom of using the cemetery as a park. October events include Sunday in the Park, a family celebration with music, children's activities and costume contests. Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours are based on the history of Oakland's 'residents' and are a great alternative to a typical ghost tour. The Run Like Hell 5k and Run Like Heck Fun Run in October are popular with locals. May brings Tunes form the Tomb, a unique music festival amid the monuments, mausoleums and gardens. Featured groups are from Atlanta, Georgia and beyond. On weekends, take a guided walking tour in the afternoon or a twilight tour in the evenings. Topics vary by date. Some examples are "Fear and Accusation: The Leo Frank Story", "African American History at Oakland", "Pioneers of Atlanta: The First 20 Years" and "Epitaphs- The immortality of Words." Downloadable audio tours are also available free from iTunes for a self-guided walk anytime.

A cool adventure and very beautiful, just busy. Not an actual hike, more of a historical walk, but interesting none the less.

One of my favorite places in the world. This cemetery is truly loved. You can feel it when you are there. I have been walking and visiting this cemetery for over 15 years and live it so much.

Oakland is huge, beautiful, and chock full of local history. I can't wait to go back, there's too much to explore in just one afternoon. Pack a picnic, take a camera, and be sure to pick up a map from the small store located within the cemetery.
