Getting There

This is a short hiking trail that leads down to two large waterfalls and a swimming hole. The trail is at times steep but short. There are stairs in a few places. There a two waterfalls. The bottom fall is 0.25 miles from the parking lot and the top fall is another 0.2 miles. The one at the top is one of the most beautiful you will find in Georgia. The falls drop into an exotic blue, green lagoon. There is a wooden deck, but you can go around and get closer. Be careful though!

There are about 10 parking spaces but on weekends in the summer they can fill up. There are no facilities. Parking is free.

Take Highway 19/129 towards Vogel State Park. Just about 1.2 miles South of Vogel State Park turn on to Helton Creek Creek Road (which begins here). The road is paved at first then quickly becomes a gravel Forest Service Road, though it is well maintained. Drive 1.4 miles from Highway 19/129 to the well marked parking lot for the falls.

Great waterfall. The hike is short. The dirt road leading in is a little tight for two cars you will have to pullover if you meet another car. This waterfall was very crowded.

This was a great trail that was off the beaten path in a residential neighborhood. It was pretty crowded, considering that it wasn’t terribly easy to find. You essentially walk about a half mile trail up to one swimming hole and then a little further to another swimming hole. This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have seen in the Smokey Mountains. There is a really cold swimming hole to swim in, and if you are adventurous, you can go behind the falls a little bit. Wear your bathing suit and water shoes, as this is a short, easy hike to go swimming. Really gorgeous!

Great multi-level waterfall with opportunity to play in the water. Use the directions in this site. Do not approach from 348 unless you have a vehicle which can ford a stream. Plan for crowds and difficulty parking.

Absolutely gorgeous. Super quick hike and the closest we have ever been to a waterfall. Pack light, wear water shoes instead of boots. You won't be able to resist going in the water! I was thankful for all of the comments about the drive to the falls. The drive is harrowing, but is absolutely worth it. If you want the "light version" of the drive, set your GPS to Helton Creek Road. If your GPS is sending you to to the Richard B Russel Scenic Highway entry, that's the hard mode being mentioned in other comments.

It’s in Vogel Springs not Vogel state park. If your driving to Vogel state park there’s a small sign on your right to Helton falls, about 7 mins before you get there. It’s a VERY narrow road that turns into a narrow gravel road with hair pin turns. Parking will be on your right, about 3 miles in. The falls are a short walk, can be very muddy, it’s an easy hike! And it is gorgeous! There are stairs to all parts of the falls. The lower part of the falls is great for a small swim. If you walk to the top of the falls, again an easy hike because there are stairs, it is BEAUTIFUL!

Quick easy hike to lower falls. This area is fun for smaller kids to wade and enjoy the falls. For the second falls continue up the trail. Deeper pool to enjoy in front of the upper falls. Decent number of people enjoying both areas. Trail can be muddy due to water of falls.

We left Vogel and headed here. You turn in and go thru Vogel Springs subdivision, continue two miles on gravel. Its bumpy in spots but not bad. At Helton there is place for 6-8 cars. From car you walk a five min trail (many roots, steps up, and mud in spots) to first set of stairs. Take that to be at bottom of falls for a great pic and to wade in the water. Bring water shoes, there was a broken glass bottle I found in the water. Sadly they were also single flip flops, clothes, cigarette butts, and old cans on the side but the waterfall is beautiful so you can overlook the trash because of it. Go back up to head to top of falls to peak over it. Saw many w dogs, many not on leashes running around which was discouraging. Saw a few elderly couples there taking a pic which was nice to see. Great photo op w the way the falls curves to the right as it comes down. Easy hike, great for kids overall.

Very nice short hike. Beautiful waterfalls. Limited parking. Couple areas to play in the water. Only down side is the amount of people on the trail.

Good short walk downhill. Some steps. Some slippery parts as you got closer to the waterfall but gorgeous scenery. Parking is limited and the road in is narrow.

Loved the waterfall. Short hike to waterfall. It was a little much to get to the trailhead though. Waze took me the wrong way and then had to turn around.

Incredible falls! It's a good idea to wear shoes you're comfortable in because the trail could be slippery on the rocks. I will visit these falls as many times as I can get there. Lovely!

Gorgeous waterfall, and so many butterflies! It’s a very short hike from parking to the actual falls. Obviously, because it’s a waterfall, it’s going to be wet and muddy. Be careful driving in, it’s a very windy and narrow one lane road with cars coming from both directions.

This is a great short hike. The real challenge is trying to get down the forest service road to the parking area. If I visited again, I’d want something better than a minivan to get to parking. Once you’re parked, it’s a gorgeous wooded hike down to the falls, and there’s two places for great photography. We went when it was warm, and there were quite a few people swimming at the base of the falls. Final note about parking — watch out for adventure bikers on the first service road. They are connecting from the other end of the road further north of the falls parking lot.

Beautiful waterfall. If you're coming in westbound on Helton Creek Road, be warned with all the rain there are two creek crossings to get past. Water was approximately 18" deep. I'd recommend a high clearance vehicle to get across. Very easy in my jeep, but a guy I was talking too nearly submerged and flooded his sedan.

The trail was very wet and muddy. the falls were nice especially the upper falls. You can get very close to the water here. We will have to come back when the rhododendron are blooming as they are full of buds and the falls are covered in them. The road in is very narrow, single car in most places, so go slow.

Hard to get to - had to drive on a very narrow, high cliff road. wish the trail itself was longer but the terrain was fun and we liked being able to see the falls from different elevations.
