This hiking trail offers spectacular views of Georgia's Chattahoochee River and is just a short drive from the city of Atlanta. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) preserves a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River in North Georgia between Atlanta and Lake Lanier. Based within the Indian Trail District of the CRNRA the East Palisades Trail features a loop trail of high, rocky bluffs offering breathtaking views of the river. It's a popular place for trail running, hiking, fishing and walking dogs. There are two parking lots in East Palisades that you can start from to access the trailheads. Indian Trail Parking Lot (Closest street address is 1400 Indian Trail NW, Atlanta, GA 30339) and Whitewater Creek Parking Lot ( Closest street address is 4001 Whitewater Creek Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30327). This is a National Park Service Trail so there is a $5 Parking Fee. The park is patrolled by United States Park Rangers and its headquarters and visitor center are located at the Island Ford Unit of the park (1978 Island Ford Parkway in Sandy Springs, Georgia). DO NOT park along the road that leads to the parking lot—even if you see other cars doing it! Those "no parking" signs ARE enforced, and the fine is a steep $130. Visitors interested in other great hikes in the area should check out the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell or the West Palisades Trail and historic Marietta Paper Mill across the river.

Went on the trail today 5/28 it was a little muddy as it had been raining the last couple days but still a great hike! We saw several people but for the most part no one was out today. The parking lots were open and the fee was waived. Lots of shade and a really good hike for beginners! The river is beautiful!

Our new favorite! Loved the Chattahoochee and the bamboo forest was amazing! Two kids ages 11 and 8, and our petite doodle, hiked 3.2 miles.

This is a great in city trail! You can walk along the river for a good chunk of it, and there is a bamboo garden as well! Parking can get crowded, but there’s still a lot out front (so convenient). We got a little lost along the way so it ended up being around 5 miles, but we didn’t mind. Overall, great experience!

This trail is no longer closed... parking areas are open and the fee is temporarily suspended. It was hard to believe we were still ITP on this trail. Great river views and some fun little up and down. Two words of warning: 1) WAY too many people with dogs off leashes. I get it that you want the pup to stretch her legs but not everyone is appreciative of dogs running up to their dogs. 2) The bamboo forest - although pictured in the reviews of this trail - is NOT on the trail. You'll want the East Palisades North Loop for that.

No parking fee as of 3/18- parking is very limited & people park along the narrow road up to parking lot which makes it even more difficult for you to get out of the way for other cars to pass by. Bamboo forest was a bit crowded, but it’s cool and very nice view as it’s right by the river. Good trail for beginners & Plenty of shade.

Perfect spot for a walk in the woods. This trail is definitely on the easier end of “moderate.” The layout is nice because there are maps at each junction so you can customize based on how you’re feeling that day. There are so pretty creek crossings, a really neat dense bamboo forest, and I often see deer out here. Great for a family outing.

Great trail with nice views. Some wild life mostly deers and snake. Not really challenging but worth the trip. The gate is closed however , you can park on the side of the street and access the trail. Have fun

Great trail, not very challenging but very beautiful. River views, shaded canopy tree sections and short hills. The variety of the trail makes it very special.

It’s a nice trail that starts out uphill but all shaded. The first half is fairly boring but the second half is very nice along the river. As of this date the parking lot is still closed so you need to park on the street and the residents are not very happy about that.

off leash dog lunged at me, with the owner saying stupidly, "sorry, she never acts like that" Owners put your dog on a leash, not only is it the law but they're animals. You don't know what they're going to do.

Make sure that you hike down to the Bamboo Forest, between EP16 and EP 26.

The trail itself is decent but was packed and we saw more dogs off leash than on which got a bit frustrating. The parking situation isn't great either, cars parked blocking half of what is barely big enough to be a two lane road making it difficult to get in/out.
