This hiking trail offers spectacular views of Georgia's Chattahoochee River and is just a short drive from the city of Atlanta. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) preserves a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River in North Georgia between Atlanta and Lake Lanier. Based within the Indian Trail District of the CRNRA the East Palisades Trail features a loop trail of high, rocky bluffs offering breathtaking views of the river. It's a popular place for trail running, hiking, fishing and walking dogs. There are two parking lots in East Palisades that you can start from to access the trailheads. Indian Trail Parking Lot (Closest street address is 1400 Indian Trail NW, Atlanta, GA 30339) and Whitewater Creek Parking Lot ( Closest street address is 4001 Whitewater Creek Rd NW Atlanta, GA 30327). This is a National Park Service Trail so there is a $3 Parking Fee. The park is patrolled by United States Park Rangers and its headquarters and visitor center are located at the Island Ford Unit of the park (1978 Island Ford Parkway in Sandy Springs, Georgia). Visitors interested in other great hikes in the area should check out the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell or the West Palisades Trail and historic Marietta Paper Mill across the river.
Nice difficulty with several options to take. Tons of dogs and trail runners. Bamboo forest, great views of the river, and beautiful places to take in nature. My husband and I hiked over 5 miles today and had an incredible time.
saw a baby snapping turtle and enjoyed the trails but nothing over spectacular today. was looking for trails to ride mountain bike on but found nothing really.. but realized there's no MTB riding listed here..
Great trails on the east side of the Chattahoochee. Nice views of the river and the overlooks are spectacular. Well worth the $5 parking fee. Get there early on the weekend. It fills up fast.
Loved it.
Awesome!
For being so close to the city, it still feels fairly remote. The view at Poppy’s point is great (plus a nice rest stop) on your way to the bamboo forest at the end/turnaround.
Nice views and Nice hikes. All the trails are easy. Some go in the woods some go by the river. Take my dog each time and she loves it.
Great trail but is tricky in some spots where the trail looks like it eroded away .
Really enjoyable trail. Great views.
Kids and dog enjoyed... a couple of small climbs... nice walks along the hooch... none of the hikes along the river are difficult, this one is a nice loop
Absolutely beautiful trails, I kept commenting on how pretty the view was every few feet! We were also able to let our dog go swimming after at the beach with a bunch of other dogs. We will definitely be going back to try the kayaking!
Beautiful in early November with brilliant tree color. I saw a deer family 15 feet off the trail. Well marked trails but have to pay attention in a few places with all the leaves covering path. Just a few uphills but worth it. Highly recommend.
Fave local trail!
Went this past weekend with family. Great hike! Loved being able to get down to the water and let the dogs play. Great overlook as well.
Nice trails, great overlook and some side trails provide lots of opportunities to be alone in the middle of Atlanta.
Loved it! Definitely will be back with the family!! Absolutely will get rafts and float down the river next time!! Can’t wait will be back soon!
It was worth finding the bamboo forest. Everyone let their dogs off leash at the river but the ranger did come around and tell them to put them back on. Great place for dogs, though!
Great hike and beautiful scenery.
well kept secret. beautiful bike inside perimeter
Beautiful hike to an amazing overlook!
Nice place to walk the dog. Insanely busy on summer holidays. Best to go during the week. Places to wade in the water - fun for cooling off and playing with the dog.
Nice hike close to the city
We hit this trail every weekend w our pups and love it Parking. An be a bit of a challenge
great views along the river
Nice river views with a bamboo forest
excellent weekday afternoon hike.. very few people. great variation in terrain and many different trail options. there's a quiet spot on a rock by the river near the ep5 marker. overall lovely hike
the trail was really fun but i never saw any bamboo
I was not able to find this place , I used the map on this app.
Great views along the way. Trails are clearly marked. There were a number of dogs that were unleashed if you have wary children. Parking is really tight if you go to the main entrance so be prepared to park off road. Overall, our 7 and 4 year olds loved it. Will be back.
Much longer than 2.9 miles if you decide to hike more. Lots of trails.
