My husband and I completed this hike this past weekend. We started out at Cooper Gap and hiked to Hawk Mountain Shelter. We stayed at the shelter and then hiked back out the next day. It was a tough hike (both ways)! We have hiked a lot of the AT and one of our favorite hikes is Slaughter Creek to Blood to Freeman and down Jarrad. (loop which starts out at Lake Winfield Scott) Blood is considered a tough hike but this one has it beat. Our legs are very sore today. We stayed in a cloud most of the trip so did not get to see any of the views but the top of Sassafrass is gorgeous with or without a view. The only water source on this route is at the shelter.
