Nice hike for winter months. No problems with bugs in January. Pretty views of bay side. Not sure why people complained about sand. Never found it to deep to impede walking. Nice trail!!

Went left instead of right so didn’t end up seeing the end but this was a great walk through the park. Great at sunset.

Not mosqitoes this time of year. Biting flies like at the beach. Piggly wiggly has some gnat repellent. Worked great! I get why it's rated easy. But there are many parts that are loose, dry sand... which I find exhausting to walk through. Nice walk tho. Just what you'd expect for the views!

Mosquitoes mosquitoes mosquitoes! We try to do as many All Trails hiking as we can, we were in the area (Oct 4) and decided to go for it. When we arrived, we got out of the truck to prep for the hike and WHAM! mosquitoes. I thought “no problem, we have some all natural repellent!” Boy, was I wrong! The further into the hike, the worse they became. We made it in about 3/4 of a mile and, like several people ahead of us, turned around and RAN! Lol. The area is definitely beautiful, with all the wildflowers and butterflies. We’ll return...when there’s frost on the pumpkin. If you go, forget the all natural repellent and go with the good ole toxic deet repellent.

This is a pretty trail, although you don’t see much of the water until the end. I think in the winter or early spring, this would be an awesome trail. But in the summer (and probably most of fall), the mosquitoes are awful. Even covered in 2 layers of 2 different types of bug spray, we were almost carried away. We would have loved to spend more time at the bay (the scenery is beautiful), but the bugs were the worst there and we could only snap a few pics and run! There’s also not much shade on the trail, so either pick a cloudy day or go when it’s cooler. Finally, a lot of the trail is pretty thick sand, so get ready for a workout!

Beautiful nature walk. Lots of birds and ends at the water where there were lots of crabs and snails. Really enjoyed it.

This is an easy hike thru the Island with great views of the Gulf of Mexico and Apalachicola Bay. We hiked a loop including part of the campground trail and back along the Gulf of Mexico beach. Great weather and only a few people on the beach for 2 miles.

First to Review

This trail is not recommended for summer time hiking, which is when I went. The trail is sandy through marshy area. The bugs are abundant during the summer so bring bug spray, sunscreen and plenty of water. I am sure this trail would be pleasurable in the fall and winter months. Plenty of birds to observe on the hike. The trail begins near the picnic pavilions and ends at the campground. If starting at the pavilions, I recommend hiking 2/3 of the trail and then back track. My mother-in-law and children did this while I completed the trail at the campground. You either have to retrace the trail or walk down the side of the road back to the end of the trail you started from. I was fortunate that an elderly couple were sitting outside their RV and he offered me a ride back to the beach and pavilions.
