Spanish Pond Loop Trail is a 2.5 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Jacksonville, Florida that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
NOTE: For more information, please see https://www.nps.gov/timu/planyourvisit/conditions.htm This hike traverses over wooded ancient dunes of maritime hammock onto even hillier Timucuan shell mounds, past a hermit's cabin, to an observation point overlooking a salt marsh along the St. Johns. On the return trip you pass a Confederate Soldier's grave and then reach a high point and vista before returning to the trailhead.
It was a nice walk. Took young kids and they did fine. There were no bugs so that was nice. The kids had a great time climbing the root covered hills.
Great trail with lots of beautiful nature views, well kept and not too buggy.
Fun hike but BUGGY after the fork. Not very muddy, besides a few spots at the beginning. Even in November, should have gotten out earlier. Heard some large group of dog-like animals howling at the airplanes flying low. Neat experience. I will definitely try again soon - with *real* bug spray.
My favorite local trail for scenic variety, a decent length loop with a few options, a few steep hills and roots to keep it interesting and a little bit of challenge (for Florida)
