Rocky Bayou Trail is a 0.8 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Niceville, Florida that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
In order to access this area, you will have to pay an admission free of $5.00 per vehicle (limit 2-8 people per vehicle); $4.00 per single occupant vehicle; $2.00 pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, or passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass. To find the trailhead, drive to the end of the RV/camper area and park along the fence. Walk down hill, past the stream restoration project (from the damming of Pudding Head Lake), and look for the Rocky Bayou Nature Trail sign at the trail intersection. The northern portion of the Rocky Bayou loop is beautiful with a constant view of the lake through the Longleaf Pine trees. There were two benches for sitting and watching the lake and numerous other benches along the route. With several trails connecting the north and south sides of the loop, just follow the outer edge of the loop to stay on route. This short little nature loop is a perfect trail for people of all ages and skill levels. If you want to explore more in the area, you will pass the trailhead for the Sand Pine Nature Trail on your way back to the parking lot.
These two trails lead off of the same trail head so you may as well do them both. It is a super easy two miles with numerous benches along the way. Most of the trail is tee covered and was not ridiculously hot in August. There are numerous areas where you can even get to the bayou shoreline and also see a stream that feeds the bayou. Wildlife is abundant and you’ll see skins, salamander and more. Signs mention to watch out for gators and snakes but I did not see any. Very friendly for kids or dogs.
Another easy trail at this state park. Picturesque views of the water. Relatively flat. Located near the camp grounds.
