Portavant Temple Mound Trail is a 0.3 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Palmetto, Florida that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This trail takes visitors around and on top of the Portavant Temple Mound, the largest Native American Temple Mound in Southwest Florida. The trail is partially wheelchair accessible, with a ramp that leads to the top of the main mound. The trail also consists of a few small sets of stairs and inclines. The site dates back hundreds of years and has been the home to multiple residents.
This is a very short, but interesting trail because of the mound and the history of the indigenous people who lived here up to 1500 years ago. You can go over the mound via a boardwalk and come back by a nice trail going around the mound. There are more trails than are indicated in the All Trails map. There is a nice dock at the furthest end of the trail.
great place to walk around, plenty of shade and lots of diverse plant and animal life.
A gem of a little trail with fascinating history as well as beautiful waterfront and forest scenery. There's a little under a mile worth of trail around the mound; be sure to take it all in.
