Ormond Scenic Loop & Trail (OSLT) is a 30+ mile double loop of roadways traversing some of the most beautiful and diverse natural scenery remaining in all of northeast Florida. There is ready access to the Atlantic Ocean, North Peninsula, Tomoka and Bulow Creek State Parks as well as numerous city and county parks. The roadway view includes unobstructed vistas of two rivers, creeks and marshes, barrier island dunes and beach, and historic dwellings. Visitors seeking a cultural and/or historic experience will find museums and historic public buildings and private homes along the corridor, in Tomoka State Park and in locations a few blocks off the designated roadways. Recreational opportunities abound with numerous parks and trails offering boating, fishing, hiking, swimming, bicycling, beach walking and much more. Vast expanses of water and natural Florida scrub vegetation create beautiful scenic vistas waiting to be photographed. Northern right whales and humpback whales can be seen offshore during migration seasons. Dolphins are a common sight. Loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles use the sandy beaches along A1A for nesting.

The Ormond Loop is mostly a scenic drive often used by bikers both, pedal and motor. This is not my usual venue but this is really not a hiking trail and I am familiar with it and is worth a visit.
We’ll start at “Fortanato Park” at the corner of Granada and John Andrews Drive in Orlando Beach. A great place to stroll or have a picnic lunch and fish or watch the boats on the Halifax River. The drive starts with a left turn on John Andrews Dr. This is the “high rent district” great to visit around Christmas. On the left side (west) of the street is the Halifax River which will be with us until we get to High Bridge Road. As we drive north the real estate becomes more conventional until reach the work on the North Peninsula State Park which is being returned to its natural condition. At a “T” intersection we turn left on High Bridge Road.
This will take us to High Bridge, which is really not very high but is a draw bridge. On the left is High Bridge Park which has a boat launching ramp, fishing pier running under the bridge and some picnic tables. On the right side is part of North Peninsula Park with Costal Strand Trail. A great spot in the spring and fall to watch the boats following the seasons. Somewhere along the road the name changes to Boardman Road. It is used to launch small boats, for fishing, crabbing or netting for bait. Further west you cross Bulow Woods Trail. To the right or north the trail is to Bulow Park and to the south it leads to Fairchild Oak. A hiker could hike in either direction and be picked up by the driver. I would guess that it would be three or four miles to either. Going north about .5 miles will take you to Boardman Observation Platform on a pond often with many birds.
At the “T” intersection with North Beach Street turn right to pick up a hiker from Bulow Woods or left for the hiker from Fairchild Oak and to continue on the loop. Either Park is a great place to visit.
Straight ahead we pass through very pretty neighborhood. Turn left at the bridge and complete the loop.
