This loop begins in a parking area at the white-blaze trail head and continues to the levee trail. It's a pretty trail that takes you around a prairie with views of river, lake, marsh, and bay swamp habitats. There are a few pines, especially on the white trail. The levee trail is raised above the prairie, so it should be pretty dry most of the time. It looks to be a pretty good place for birding as well.

This trail is ideal for those looking to walk/hike/jog/bike, as it is basically five miles of path on a levee/berm. Gorgeous views of vast prairie wetland to the left and picturesque river on right.

It should be noted that this is not so much a trail as it is a water management district road which you can hike on. The best part is right as you cross over the Ocklawaha bridge and you get an overlook of the area. There is NO SHADE on this trail so be prepared for that, you would roast in the summer. Traveling the trail itself on foot around the lake/marsh is a rather boring affair as its just low Florida swampland and there are alligators and snakes. There are a lot of ticks on the hike in. Even with repellent I found several on my person afterwards. Skip this loop unless you are just looking to put down miles. The access area is down a dirt road off SE137th Ave.

First to Review

This was a great hike! Well maintained, we walked counterclockwise around the prairie. The lower half is without shade so a wide brimmed hat and sunscreen is a must. We saw a HUGE moccasin sunning itself in the lower section of trail. Along the back portion there's frequent shade intervals. We saw a 5.5ft gator sunning himself right on the trail here, but he moved along quickly. Also saw a deer across the water, AND a big otter rolling and playing on the trail. We've got tired sore feet now but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Surprisingly, not ONE mosquito the whole hike! - Dec. 2019
