Getting There

On the shore of Lake Rochelle in the City of Lake Alfred is a pristine expanse of natural Florida called the Mackay Garden and Lakeside Preserve. With almost a mile of lakefront shoreline, this 112 acre property is home to many species of endangered plants and animals. It has been preserved through a grant from the Florida Communities Trust and has been developed with nature trails, a passive recreational park, a natural canoe launch, and a fitness trail. At its heart is a beautiful mansion built in 1916 by Alexander Mackay. Trails are easy-walking, basically flat, paths through native Florida flora, with fauna to go with it.

Parking, restrooms, picnic shelter, BBQ grills, canoe launch. Historic mansion and grounds including a walled arbor and sunken garden. The lakeside trail offers lots of shade and views of Lake Rochelle. Rare native plant communities on site include cutthroat seeps and sandhill.

Lake Alfred City Administration: 863-291-5270.

From Lakeland follow US 92 about 12 miles to the intersection of US92 and US17. Continue north to Lake Alfred and turn right on Mackay Boulevard. Follow this road to the second set of black gates on the right and turn right, parking is inside gates on the right. Parking Area GPS Coordinates: N 28 04.835' W 081 43.217' at the west trailhead.

I didn't get to walk the trails but there was a wedding happening! It was so beautiful to see...from a far Lol. There's a small garden, a playground for the kids. I went with my family and we pretty much just hung out in the Parking lot and played soccer while listening to music. There's a gorgeous lake with a white gazebo in front. It would've been cool to walk around!

Great trail! Kid friendly, & pretty easy only like a half mile. There’s a park and visitor center. Clear view of the water. There’s also a very pretty gazebo that’s perfect for graduation or family pictures. There were a lot of bugs but that’s just Florida. Keep your eyes open tho because I did see a snake.
