Chipola River: FL 162 to FL 166 is a 8.6 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Marianna, Florida that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.
My family has paddled the Chipola too many times to count. The river is spring fed and the bottom is visible throughout most of its upper region with a few deep holes. The river varies from swift tree-lined, limestone creek to a broad, slow moving stream surrounded by swamps. In some areas the river has high bluffs and caves and there is at least one nice rapid at Look and Tremble. There is a wide variety of birds and vegetation along its bluffs and swampland. Exploring some of the springs feeding the river is fun and exciting. Due to a lack of suitable camping spaces, the river is best done in day trip sections. If not for a lack of places to camp comfortably, I would have given this river a five star rating.
