started at bellamy bridge, the beginning of the trip way nice and relaxing. then all the trouble began. Lots of downed trees to go over or under. one time we had to get out of the kayak and drag it over a downed tree and get back in praying we didn't flip. what the map doesn't tell you is the river dead ends in Florida caverns state park. we learned the hard way on this trip. if you do plan on paddling this river make sure you have all day to do it. cause it will take all day.

This river follows a beautiful path through the North Florida area showcasing everything from sandy, clear pools to deep, muddy river.

It is highly trafficked and can be absolutely maddening with the high volume of humans floating it during the summer. Canoes, inner tubes, and boats are always in view so be prepared for the crowds.

My family has paddled the Chipola too many times to count. The river is spring fed and the bottom is visible throughout most of its upper region with a few deep holes. The river varies from swift tree-lined, limestone creek to a broad, slow moving stream surrounded by swamps. In some areas the river has high bluffs and caves and there is at least one nice rapid at Look and Tremble. There is a wide variety of birds and vegetation along its bluffs and swampland. Exploring some of the springs feeding the river is fun and exciting. Due to a lack of suitable camping spaces, the river is best done in day trip sections. If not for a lack of places to camp comfortably, I would have given this river a five star rating.
