Description
Waypoints (8)

The Red Trail (western loop) features a wide diversity of Florida biomes - going through fields, to hardwood hammocks, to pine scrubs. It also allows a great opportunity to see wildlife, such as deer, hawks, turkey, and phesants. This trail is excellent for new hikers and families. The Yellow Trail (eastern spur) follows the Alafia River through flood plains and lowlands - which means during the summer wet season, this trail is water logged if not outright flooded. It offers more of a challenge but has great views of the river with some small limestone rapids.

HikingFlooded

The only reason I gave this two stars is that as of Labor Day weekend it was impossible to complete the Yellow Trail. Once you reach the river, it's completely flooded and it's deep enough that it might be worth putting some type of foot bridge over that spot. This was my first visit but it looks like it's just regular seasonal flooding you see on a lot of Florida trails in the summer. I used a walking stick to see how deep it was and couldn't touch bottom before pulling it. At that point it was up to my waist and dark enough that I decided not to attempt a crossing. My guess is, based on the terrain, it was probably up to my chest. But it cut the Yellow Trail extremely short. There's also a Blue Trail that goes in the opposite direction along the river that has suffered a similar fate but looked interesting. The Red Trail that runs mostly through grass on the west side of this area was in good shape, just hot as others have mentioned. I crossed paths with two deer while I was out there but did not see another person. I'll give this spot another shot in the winter after the rainy season. One other note, though there's plenty of parking off Turkey Creek Road, there's a spot on Pitt Road that's marked as another entrance. I thought I could pick up the Yellow Trail over there, but there's nowhere to park on that dead end road unless you leave it on the side of the road in front of someone's house.

HikingNo shade

Did the red trail today. There is minimal shade so be careful on hot/sunny days. The trail is mostly grass and some sand when along the river. My dog loved it, bring lots of water!

Nice trail going through different habitats. Summertime can be a little hot on the loop trail. The river trail is much shadier.

Beautiful location, hiked about 4 miles yesterday. Did half the trail due to a small picnic by the river & then rain soon after. Gotta love Florida weather! Trail was easy to follow & we even got to see wild hogs! Will definitely visit again.

We set off on the trail that followed the river; yellow and blue markers. It was tricky but beautiful, and eventually, just kind of ended so we turned around. We weren’t sure if we were even on the trail, but it was fun nonetheless. Mosquitos weren’t bad for a summer hike either. We made our way back and did the loop, and saw a few buck, hogs, hawks and lots of butterflies. Great hike, but get there early to beat the sun and rain!

Recommend wearing pants because a lot of the loop is in the grass. There were tons of butterflies and some flowers blooming

Hiked on 6/20/20. Not a lot of shade. No animal tracks. Easy half grass half sand wide path to walk with kids.

Did the yellow trail. A nice 5.5 mile hike! It was a little overgrown at places, so be careful with exposed legs. When you start the hike, follow the yellow marks until you hit the river then go to the left and you will continue to see the yellow marks for the trail. (We accidentally went right then finally realized there was no trial)

The one side (right) is a easy walk, beautiful scenery, heard an owl and saw some deer. the left side is a more rigorous trail scrambling over trees and roots alongside the river, very scenic.
