Getting There

Note: The summit is periodically closed due to nesting birds. Steep Rock Preservation's Yellow Circle trail (so called because the blaze is a yellow circle) is a trail that generally follows the banks of the Shepaug River in Washington Depot, CT. The trail begins in a former rail bed, which follows the river for approximately 1.0 mile. The trail then becomes more strenuous and horses are no longer allowed. The trail loops back on itself and returns to its original starting point.

Parking is available across the bridge on Tunnel Road or in front of the trail.

Steep Rock Association, Inc. P.O. Box 279 Washington Depot, Connecticut 06794 (860) 868-9131

From north or south, take U. S. 202 to CT-47 into Washington Depot, CT. Turn left onto Main Street No 1. At the end of the road, turn right down River Road. The trail head is near the three-way intersection of River Road, Lower Church Hill Road, and Tunnel Road.

Great walking trail. The overall route (including the summit ascent) should be rated as easy though. Plenty of cool features to make the trail worth it - from the suspension bridge to the rail tunnel and the summit views. If you’re lucky, you may spot some Barred Owls in the woods and Great Blue Herons out on the river.

One of my favorite places - lots of trails, all with different fun features. we enjoyed exploring the ruins, going through the railroad tunnel, and navigating through the trails. Trail map is must to be able to find all the neat features.

Nice loop that runs along the Shepaug River for the first half, and goes further into the woods/uphill for the second half. The only disappointment was that the summit was closed for nesting animals, but this was well-marked and it was easy to continue on the trail skipping that part. The entire trail was very well blazed and clear for easy travel. The trail up until the footbridge should be doable for all skill levels; it’s only the latter half that’s a bit of a hike. :)

Great place. The peak trail was closed for nesting birds. Nice walk along the river. Tunnel is super cool as is the suspension bridge. Plenty to explore, not too challenging. Fun day

The white trail has an ascendant narrow rocky path after the bridge that is so much fun.

Super cool area! This is everything I enjoy in trails. The parking area was quite busy. Not full, but it was also the first 80 degree day of the year. However, I only bumped into less than a handful of people. I HIGHLY recommend taking a photo of the park map at the entrance of the trail. Cell service is spotty at best throughout, and I would have been lost without it. I haven’t seen my phone say 1X for service in like 10 years, but it did today. I went straight for the Steep Rock Summit, beautiful views up there. Great rolling hills. Then followed the yellow to the suspension bridge, which is a fun feature. Took a detour up to the top of “The Clamshell”, which is well worth the view back down on the bridge. I then crossed the bridge again and followed the green trail back to the lot instead. Wonderful afternoon. This is a really awesome slice of Western CT.

A great hike with kids - my 4 yr old could complete 70 % of the yellow trail on his own. Last 1 1/2 miles has inclines and downhill. Very good hike - picturesque

Beautiful area ! Saw a raccoon and others said there was a black bear sighting that day. Busy, even on a Tuesday, so get there early. But once you get up more into the woods there are less people. I did the yellow loop and added lots of other smaller loops to go longer . The summit is still closed due to nesting birds. I would say this is an easy moderate. Not much of a climb and very well cleared trail.

Not as strenuous as we’d expected - fairly simple hike but really nice by the river, thru the pines and then up to the overlook of the ‘clam’.

Great trail, nice views loved the cave tunnel. Amazing ice formations hanging off the top. Would love to hike again in the spring and fall.
