Getting There

Portions of the trail are suitable for, and are used for, cross-country skiing and geocaching. Site-specific activities enjoyed along the route include bird watching, hunting (very limited), fishing, horseback riding, bouldering and rock climbing (limited). The mainline trail is blazed with blue rectangles. Lightning is a hazard on exposed summits and ledges during thunderstorms. Snow is common in the winter and may necessitate the use of snowshoes. Ice can form on exposed ledges and summits, making hiking dangerous without special equipment. Biting insects can be bothersome during warm weather. Parasitic deer ticks (which are known to carry Lyme disease) are a potential hazard. Wearing bright orange clothing during the hunting season (Fall through December) is recommended.

There are no parking fees at Salmon River State Forest.

HikingGreat!

Tough climbs at the beginning and middle. I got stuck going too late so I had to run the trail to beat sunset. Very pretty but tough.

So pretty, lightly used, dog friendly trail. Had it all - lovely riverside hike, nice elevation, diversity of forests (cedar to laurel). Very pretty, good ups and downs for a nice workout.

This is near East Hadam not East Lyme. Great trails with lots of options. depending which trails you take it can be a few miles or 10 miles. beautiful water falls and river views. Enough up and down to give you a work out. The remains of an old mill and sluiceway are interesting and fun to explore. Of course the old covered bridge is nice too. Great trails and highly recommended.

Excellent hike, VERY well marked/blazed. The duration is the only reason I'd support the "moderate" designation, otherwise the hike itself is pretty easy. A light spritz of bug spray helps too. We went on a Thursday and saw a couple families towards the entrance but not a single other soul the whole time - very peaceful!

outstanding trail! i went with my family and my dog on july 4, 2020 and the trail was not crowded. the view of the river was lovely, as was the pond. we all really enjoyed it. easily navigable, open, and pretty trees. would highly recommend for beginner and intermediate hikers. took just under 3 hours for one experienced hiker and two intermediate hikers.

This was a great trail. Buggy due to the recent rains. We went very early and only passed 4 people. The covered bridge was beautiful. Took about 3 hours to complete. Everyone was conscious to social distance as well. Will go back in the fall to see the leaves.
