Getting There

Portions of the trail are suitable for, and are used for, cross-country skiing and geocaching. Site-specific activities enjoyed along the route include bird watching, hunting (very limited), fishing, horseback riding, bouldering and rock climbing (limited). The mainline trail is blazed with blue rectangles. Lightning is a hazard on exposed summits and ledges during thunderstorms. Snow is common in the winter and may necessitate the use of snowshoes. Ice can form on exposed ledges and summits, making hiking dangerous without special equipment. Biting insects can be bothersome during warm weather. Parasitic deer ticks (which are known to carry Lyme disease) are a potential hazard. Wearing bright orange clothing during the hunting season (Fall through December) is recommended.

There are no parking fees at Salmon River State Forest.

I was going to do the full loop but my dog was wiped out before we reached Day Brook Falls. I mistakenly thought the falls were in the very beginning off a side trail but those weren’t the ones. To get to the falls keep going on Blue until you see the sign for North River Loop go towards the left and follow that down until you cross a bridge. After the bridge go left and the follow the water line until you see the falls. You will be walking on blue red for a little bit. The falls are beautiful make sure you take some time to enjoy. I then head back in the same direction as I came instead. I clocked more miles than I thought on this one. I will be back to do the full loop in the future

HikingGreat!

One of my favorite hikes in the area. 6.3 miles recorded if you don’t go to the falls. 1,152 foot elevation gain. Not a tough hike overall, but you will get a workout going uphill for almost a mile on your return from the covered bridge. The trails are all very well marked. Some rocky areas, but if it’s dry they’re no problem.

Holy hills! I'm a novice hiker. This was an amazing trail. Long, beautiful, with everything except for people. It was 32° though. I clocked 7.6 miles from the bridge (with the addition of seeing the falls) and 1106ft of elevation.

HikingGreat!

Turned Record off early by accident. Started from Day Pond- what a beautiful place! Serious ups and downs but solid trail. Great work out- felt pooped but accomplished when it was over --would 100% do it again. The falls were beautiful- Salmon river beautiful. Very few muddy spots- easy to go around. Perfectly marked blue blazes A+

Nice Sunday afternoon one-way hike with all the kids. Nice views of river. Hemlocks, pines and hardwood forest. Trails were pretty icy. The ice made the waterfalls look really cool.

Nice brisk 20 with little to no wind and sunny. Trail offered decent footing but Yaktrax or some grippers for your boots sure helped out. Excellent workout! Forgot to stop the App.., drove 2 miles with it on!

Good trek. Some erosion issues and the trail was moderately muddy on a warm day following rain.

Easier than we thought. Some spots were really wet so had to walk around but the trail was really well marked. Saw many people and dogs so that slowed us a bit as we had to let folks pass. Otherwise it was a rather easy hike, not moderate.

For a nice Sunday afternoon it was only moderately busy. We met probably a dozen other parties on the trail and a few more near Day Pond.
