Facilities

This rugged loop features expansive vistas with breathtaking views of the Wassel Reservoir. There are plenty of rocks to sit on and take in the views. Come during the fall to see the leaves changing colors along this popular hiking trail, or come in the winter for snowshoeing. This popular New England hike features lots of steep uphills and partial rock climbing over boulders at some points. This loop is full of awesome rock formations, pretty vernal pools, epic cliff views, and a cool waterfall. What sets Ragged Mountain apart from its neighboring traprock cliffs is its solitude. Central and Southern CT is full of great parks, hiking trails and awesome overlooks, but this one seems quieter, despite the fact that the trailhead is in a suburban neighborhood.

There are many no parking signs where the trail begins, so just park on a nearby street.

This is one of my favorite trails in the Hartford area for its wilderness and its moderate difficulty. Never had I hiked it in winter but I absolutely loved it. Bring the spikes cuz they’re needed. And for those who don’t want to do the full loop, there’re plenty of intersecting smaller loops.

Went on a Friday morning, didn’t see many people but the lot and road was full of cars. We did the whole loop trail. Found the loop trail hard to follow at times. It was pretty muddy today as ice on the trail melted. Beautiful views at top and ridge line. Went counter clockwise.

HikingGreat!

Great work out!! A lot of beautiful views. We did the entire loop. We went counterclockwise and glad we did. About 2/3 into the trail we had a hard time following the trail and got lost for 45 minutes. We met up with a very nice man that had the same problem. So, together we figured it out. Be aware of the trail system, it can get alittle tricky.

Nice hike. The markings could be more prominently marked. Had to reassess several times.

We parked at the 437 West Ln, Berlin entrance. We had read that if you’re doing the full loop that going clockwise was better. It was a good recommendation! I’m not good going down steep inclines, but I do like to climb up! Going clockwise worked for me! What a great hike with some minor rock climbing. The views were worth the sweat! Going clockwise has one draw back, it’s a long way back to the entrance! There is a cutoff that brings you to the entrance faster!, but of course we didn’t take it. The one cool thing about the end of the hike was a water fall, which you had to climb by it’s side! Lots of water to cross or deal with on the back side of the loop, be prepared! We are in the 60-ish range, while we did the whole loop, we did spend more time doing it than the average group! If you want a quicker hike to the view, head straight up the middle of the loop. Highly recommended!
