Facilities

This rugged loop features expansive vistas with breathtaking views of the Wassel Reservoir. There are plenty of rocks to sit on and take in the views. Come during the fall to see the leaves changing colors along this popular hiking trail, or come in the winter for snowshoeing. This popular New England hike features lots of steep uphills and partial rock climbing over boulders at some points. This loop is full of awesome rock formations, pretty vernal pools, epic cliff views, and a cool waterfall. What sets Ragged Mountain apart from its neighboring traprock cliffs is its solitude. Central and Southern CT is full of great parks, hiking trails and awesome overlooks, but this one seems quieter, despite the fact that the trailhead is in a suburban neighborhood.

There are many no parking signs where the trail begins, so just park on a nearby street.

Most of the trail are easy walking with some areas need a little assistance with a stick to support. It’s a big loop. We did not finish the whole loop trail so did not get a chance to see a photo view point. Will come back next time to try a different route.

First time here. A beautiful hike. Very little time out of the woods but great variation in the terrain.

This is an excellent hike! I did they entire blue/red loop clockwise and finished in about 2.5 hours. I’m 55, in ok shape and move pretty well (had to rest a few times, haha). When done clockwise, the first half is more climbing and descending rocks/ short rock faces. This leaves a very pleasant gradual walking trail for the descent. If you’ve done the sleeping giant blue trail (also clockwise), you’ll love this hike.

I had heard great things about this hike and was a little underwhelmed. let me start off by saying if your planning to do this hike go early because there is limited parking and it fills up quick. second if you hike clockwise you get the good view and rough terrain early making for a gentle cooldown over the last few miles wich can be boring. lastly the views. they were ok but just ok nothing was breath taking ,but all in all I still enjoyed it and had fun and thats what matters. side not its pretty easy to navigate but I did have to reference my map a few times something to keep in mind.

Nice trail... recommend hiking this route counter-clockwise to save the better half for last. Wear hiking boots, not sneakers... #raggedmountain

Agreed with the previous review, the trail is clearly marked but you have to stay vigilant of turns. I read reviews about people getting lost on this trail and kept my eyes peeled for the blazes and did just fine on my own for the first hike. My phones said 6.4 miles but could have overestimated but in any case don’t believe whoever said 10 miles below, grossly misleading. I thought overall it was delightful three hour hike with great viewpoints.

The 1st half of the trail was a bit boring. Started counterclockwise and headed up this trail. The 2nd half of this trail is where it started to liven up. The views, the rock climb, the up and down part was fun. Clocked in about 6.25 miles with my 6 year old. He did great! This particular trail was well marked and mostly clear path.

HikingGreat!

Did the blue red loop today (counterclockwise) great trail! Downside I feel like the lower portion is more challenging. So for me the latter half of the loop was really tough, since I was tired by the time I got there. But the views are incredible!!! Can’t wait to bring my wife to see it!!
