Penquonnock Mountain Trail is a 5.5 mile loop trail located near Trumbull, Connecticut that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running.
Nice trail, well marked overall but there were a few spots that were confusing for a moment but the app made it very easy to redirect back to the intended trail. There are many nice spots to deviate a bit off the main trail for photos and exploring interesting things. There were a few muddy spots along the trail but they were still frozen for the most part so not a problem at all. Two or three small streams had to be crossed on stepping stones but it was easy to do without slipping. Plenty of hikers left 4-5' walking sticks which might be helpful for those who are less sure-footed. All in all an enjoyable hike and I will do it again.
I had pretty low expectations since so many trails around the area are close to highways and this didn’t look much different on the map. But it was actually much quieter than other trails around probably because the highway is higher and over the hill. Trail and rocks and river were all beautiful. There were many other people enjoying the park, many on bicycles, but it was still pretty quiet for the most part. We had to cut our hike shorter than intended so we crossed the river on a tree and walked back on the bike path. The path was almost uncomfortably crowded, but basically fine. I would come back.
I have walked the bike path here for 30 years and finally did the trail on the other side of the river. A nice hike, but not well marked, as you can tell from my recording. Lots of criss crossing trails that aren't marked so we just kept going in the best direction. Nice day for the pups
Trail is shared with mountain bikers. Slippery but nice walk in woods.
Did one way, not as loop. Would have to cross river (no bridge) to get back to rec path. Ended up on park street. Nice trail near the water! Too warm for polar bears today.
Hiked in from the park entrance, behind the splash pad. Very nice scenic walk, great stream views, fun semi-technical trails with lots of roots. Some of the side trails just disappear, so it’s easy to feel lost, even though you are in a park. We tried to follow this route, and came across deep mud and pooling water. It had rained heavily the past few days, so another week without rain, and it should be clear. There is a great spot to sit, in the sun, overlooking the highway. Got to see a corvette throttle out and blast by at 100+. We ended up in the public works lot, which felt like an apocalyptic waste land, and eventually came out by the dog park. There is a field off the road, just past the dog park, and in the back right hand corner there is an entrance to a trail. About 20 yards in there at two giant mountain bike ramps with 20-25 foot drops. Overall, a good hike, good hills, good views, and after going about 5.5 miles, only saw 4 people. ***note: the Indian Ledge Park parking area is for Trumbull residents only. You can get a $25 ticket for parking there. However, there is a parking area up the road by the trail crossing.
