Getting There

Peak Mountain, also called Copper Mountain, is a traprock (volcanic) mountain located in East Granby. The trail follow the ridge of the mountain and offers great views. It is part of the Metacomet trail and there areas to park at either end. The trail rises steeply and then evens out as you reach the ridge. There you'll see the first of many spots to stop and take in the view (most people don't go further than this, so the rest of the trail is quiet!). Interesting geology (check out Wiki), great views, and not crowded! Great for dogs!

You can park at either end of the trail off the side of the road but the larger is in Granby on the corner of Route 20 and Newgate Road. As soon as you turn onto Newgate you pull over to park. Trail head is right there, marked by the Metacomet blue blazes. Other spot is Rt 168 in Suffield.

Super easy. I91 toward Bradley Airport, stay on Rt 20, turn and park on Newgate Rd.

Walking

We saw a bear right at the end of the trail while returning. It stopped, looked at us and walked away. Whoa! Overall, it was a good hike, just the kind you'd like to do on a Sunday afternoon.

Amazing trail. Steep incline at the beginning but then it levels out, nice and clear. Beautiful view, and the trail was nice and shady. Will definitely be back!

Excellent trail! Steep in the beginning but then nice and fairly flat. The views were a nice reward for the climb. The primitive camping site wasn’t much :) I would definitely do this trail again.

Went on this trail with my wife and four year old son. It was an excellent hike. We did this on a Tuesday and only saw one person the entire time. We stayed on the blue trail, which was very well marked. We made an afternoon out of it and ate lunch on the trail. My son loved this hike. The views were awesome! Definitely worth the hike up. This is one trail I would definitely recommend to my friends. All in all, I think we put in about 4.5 - 5 miles (round trip). But we did venture off the trail a bit.

This was a great early morning hike with the kiddos. The only really steep part was in the beginning. The rest was very manageable. Views were beautiful, bugs weren’t awful, and most of it is in the shade. I imagine it will be even better when the leaves aren’t on the trees, but we enjoyed it!

First five mins of the trail were a decently steep incline and then leveled out significantly. Rest of the trail was along the cliffside with a beautiful view at multiple points.

Hiked in and camped overnight at the primitive site. There were no nearby water sources, but the Scouts had several gallons of water stocked; thank you, Scouts! Posted signs ask that you hang your food. Trail conditions were great, no mud despite rain the day before. There were just a few mosquitos and no ticks found. Wildlife seen and heard: chipmunks, squirrels, woodpeckers

Hiked 6/25/2020: Hot but beautiful day, and a nice quick hike. This is a very well maintained section of the Metacomet Trail, not too technical or difficult with just a little bit of an uphill at the beginning but a very rewarding view (or two). No bugs, no mud, and not too many people!

Nature trips

Walked from the trail head at the intersection of new gate and CT 20, beyond the summit of peak mountain to the place marked primitive Campground on the map. As others have said, I found it to be a relatively easy trail. There is a steep area right near the beginning and a couple smaller inclines along the way, but it’s not bad. This is a very popular hiking spot. If you’re concerned about social distancing you might want to think about doing it during off peak hours. The trail itself is pretty well marked and maintained and there are a couple of nice lookouts to the west.
