Metacomet, West Peak, East Peak, and Castle Craig Loop is a 6.7 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Meriden, Connecticut that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Please note that Hubbard Park has an extensive trail system with various color blazes. There are multiple trails to take to reach the destinations along this route. There are many variations to take to shorten or lengthen your hike.
I very much enjoyed the trail combo suggested by app and looking forward to return visit to the Hubbard Park network to explore some of the other trails. The blue blazed portion was well marked but the return leg with white blazes with red dot was not as well marked. Not normally a fan of trap rock but that was a not the majority of the trail
Nice trail for CT. Highly recommend going along the red trail on the way out. Lots of scenic spots!
Great hike! Beautiful views and fairly chill most of the way. We went clockwise, as others suggested, and the blue along the ridge up to the peak was lovely and just difficult enough to be interesting. The rest of it was a breeze—the spur out to the west peak is along a paved road but it felt appropriate for a little scenic detour like that to be relatively easy. The route back is a little hard to pick out because the markers are faded (white, then white with red dots), but the trail itself is wide and easy to follow. All around, lovely! We saw several very good dogs, and zero phantom dogs!
Beautiful hike, not too crowded, lots of cool opportunities to climb rocks just off the trail. I recommend this trail very highly!
Great trail. A couple of rock scrambles but otherwise not difficult. Did the loop clockwise to go up the scrambles rather than down. Was a bit disappointed that some of the trail from East to West Peak was on the road. Castle was actually anticlimactic after all the beautiful views on the way up. Definitely go on to West Peak- you could see Long Island sound in the distance and the rocks there are interesting. Be aware that the red trail back is not well marked
Moderate mostly rocky trail with gorgeous views-lots of photo ops
This hike provided the ups, downs, and overlooking heights that I long for in a hike. While CT is generally a low elevation state, this trail allowed us to go fairly high up and above the local water shed/supply lake. The trail was clearly marked though 5% of it needed a bit of double checking on AllTrails app. I'd definitely come back.
The trail had some beautiful views, some fun scramble, and steep climbs, broken glass in many areas, A LOT of people at the castle (but it was Labor Day weekend). Overall not a bad hike.
This trail offers amazing views and a great variation of terrain even if most of it is rocky... West peak view, the view from the castle and the view on you way back following the blue train is so rewarding and that is what keeps you going the next mile. However, Be prepared for “more” than the app rating and reviews if you are a beginner hiker like me. I would rate it borderline hard because of a couple of steeps which were really challenging, and some portion of the trail where you really need to focus on where to land your foot
I loved this hike! It was closer to 7 miles with a few steep and treacherous areas but a lot of it was easy. The scenery as views were unbelievable. I saw 2 falcons, 2 deer and 2 snakes. And not very many other hikers except for at the top by the tower. I definitely recommend this trail.
Beautiful hike! Dry, no bugs at all! Goes up by the radio towers on West Peak. Great views a little further on. No really steep climbs.
Overall pretty trail with some small brooks. One section is a pretty narrow, Rocky, downhill, slope along the edge of the mountain and is then followed by a steep uphill. Good workout!
