Huge fan of this park and the wealth of trails that are in the area. There are plenty of options if you don’t want to climb to the top of Sunset Rock. I live in town, so it can be busy when it’s really nice out, I try to go when the weather isn’t perfect. There is a great forest section of the Metacomet Trail that passes through, and the Pipeline Trail is always peaceful. I use those trails to create a bigger loop. The trails closer to the lake are super muddy if it rains, however. Lots of wash out, and there are areas that have gotten so bad over the years with foot traffic and weather, that any attempt to put logs down isn’t helping. Wear waterproof boots, or go when it’s been dry for a few days to avoid soaked socks and mud covered shoes.

We enjoyed this hike, and I wanted to comment on the “easy” rating. There was a big climb at the start and plenty of places to scramble up and down the rocks. So, depending on the age and/or fitness level of the hikers, it may feel more like a “moderate” hike.

Such a lovely hike and the views from the peak and the sunset opportunity spot where phenomenal. To cloudy for a sunset unfortunately but simply amazing.
