Iron Trail is a 7.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near East Canaan, Connecticut that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running and is best used from March until November.
Thebeginning of the trail is flat but stony. Then comes a strenuous climb, which is rocky and eroded in places. This is the only difficult part of the hike. The rest is easy, wooded and flat, occasionally requiring walking to the side of the trail to avoid deep muddy ruts left by vehicles. Pleasant woods; a couple of interesting old foundations.
Easy hike once you get past the initial climb. Perfect day with fresh snow crunching underfoot. Not another person around.
The trail is in good condition. comments about the need for repair are very overstates This is a fairly gentle hike for the difficulty rating. Expect a beautiful walk in the woods with no particular views the trail is also comprised of a mix of access roads, trail, atv paths. expecy ruts and even some gravel patched. because of the deep shadow and slow incline great for a hot day.
Nice hike with strenuous climb on first part of the hike. Unpleasantly gnatty until one gets up to the plateau. And very flat once up there. Mostly well marked until the last 1/3, where sticking to the blue blazes rather than other tracks can require attention. Well maintained otherwise. Pretty rocky and eroded in parts. Shame on those who used vehicles on the trails, causing serious ruts on much of it and erosion.
