Easy walk until you hit the steep portion. A hiking stick would be helpful, especially on the way down; but we managed just fine without one.

Hike up was steep and rocky at the top but view was well worth it. DO NOT try to do the loop. Trail is not maintained at all or marked. Only do out-and-back.

The view was beautiful, a real good spot to see the sunset! Small rocky climb before the peak. Would be wise to bring bags and pick up the trash at the top/start of the trail! Leave no trace!!

Nice and quiet. Not to long to get to the top either.

Beautiful view! The online trail did not match the grounds; therefore, we couldn’t loop. We would definitely re-visit with updated expectations.

Nature trips

For my 100 verified trail on the site, I wanted to do a memorable one. This one definitely qualified. I went up to the top via the western path, which isn’t as steep. I came back down on the steeper one, which is rockier and not as laden with dirt, so I think it’s safer. Still, extreme care is needed going up and down. There are a couple trees down over the trail but they can be navigated around. The path is rooted and rocky in places. I almost stepped on a garter snake near the beginning. Bird people - note lots of red-breasted nuthatches in the evergreens especially near the top. There is a big push of them in our area now.

We’ve enjoyed this quick hike in the fall, but we just went back and unfortunately it’s VERY overgrown with poison ivy when you enter the loop to the left.

Short hike but some decent views of Heublein Tower from the top. Not the best maintained state park

Hiking

Easy hike to begin with. Some muddy spots but branches have been laid down to make it passable. Out of nowhere comes a rock face. There is a tree with white blazes indicating the trail goes right. It does, HARD right 90 degrees. If you are adventurous, stay to the left and scramble up the face. It’s steep and you’ll be on all fours at points. The southern and western views at the top are great. We could easily see Sleeping Giant in Hamden from the top.

The early part of the trail to the kiosk was overgrown, not well maintained or marked. The main body was better it was marked clearly but muddy. The end of the trail is a rocky scramble that made me nervous with our two dogs (medium and large sized) who lost their footing once or twice and had to be lifted over one particularly steep bit. The view from the top was a good pay off I have to admit.
