Gay City State Park charges an entrance fee for out of state registered vehicles. Fees are $15 on weekends/holidays and $10 on weekdays. This trail more-or-less rings the park and it’s about 5 miles. The northern half of the trail is pretty woodsy and the very northernest northern tip takes in a nice beaver pond. The southern half of the loop (south of the Gay City Trail) is the most remote area within the park and hits some nice stands of pine and hemlock as well as a few pond overlooks and stream crossings.

Pretty trail, well marked. The snow gave it a nice challenge.

Lots of damage in the woods, but the trails were well-maintained. Our old standby… Always a nice hike.

HikingGreat!Icy

This was a wonderful easy hike even though the wind chill was 11 degrees. The trails are well maintained and very well marked. There are some nice streams that you cross and the ice buildup made for some interesting pictures. I imagine it gets crowded in nice weather but it is still worthwhile. I would rate this as easy.

The trail itself is beautiful. What happened to me was not. I was attacked by a pit bull type dog that was off leash. I yelled and screamed as he charged me, but the owner was no where to be seen. I kicked the dog and he backed away and took off up the trail. I remembered I had pepper spray so I got that ready in case he returned. About 5 minutes later the dog came down the trail again and went right for me I yelled and screamed and sprayed the dog. He took off and as I looked up I saw the owner quite a distance away. I yelled at him and said some things that a grandmother shouldn’t say. I told him I sprayed the dog and if he came near me again I would hit him with a branch. He was mad that I sprayed the dog. What a jerk. I did report the incident to the Hebron dog warden. I have been hiking Gay City several times a week for a long time and have never had a dog attack me. I have noticed that there are more and more dog owners who are not leashing their dogs there and other hiking trails. I’m not sure what part of the law they don’t understand. LEASHES ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES. I don’t want to hurt any dog, but I will protect myself .
