HikingGreat!

Because we are "flatlanders" and have some medical issues, we decided that this hike would be perfect for us (and it was). We parked at the Visitor's Center, and walked to the marina (closed for the summer) and back. Nice, clean restrooms both at the Visitor's Center and the marina area (actually part of the alundromat building of the camping area). Not much incline, clear path of dirt and gravel, and allowed us to see some beautiful scenery around the lake. Not much cover/shade, so I agree with others to be prepared with sunscreen, hat, etc. The first part is pretty boring (except for the stray cows), but it gets better.

It was nice and easy. I think it would be more beautiful in the fall when leaves are changing.

Hiking

Completed this hike over Labor Day weekend and it was hot, but lovely. The trail begins in the parking lot of marina of steamboat lake. The trail is quite easy (don't think it should be rated as moderate) although it is a longer journey. The trail doesn't provide any cover so make sure to bring sunscreen, hat, long sleeves, all the essentials for a day in the high altitude sun. The trail winds around the lake makes its way toward 129. Cows were grazing along side of the road which piqued the curiosity of our dog. While the trail follows the road for a bit, it doesn't take away from the surrounding beauty too much. You will cross another small road the goes near the visitor center which provided a nice break in some air conditioning after some time in the hot sun. A fork in the road by the cabin indicates the way. This will also lead you to Tombstone loop, a short and easy easy loop gains a small of elevation and provides some good views. The whole trip took us about 5 hours with breaks.

Running

Hiked out .7 miles from trailhead with family, ran the rest. The trail past the visitors center is currently closed 1/2 mile out. I got 5 miles all told.

First to Review

It's not a bad hike. The scenery is beautiful. We hiked ~1.5m out and back from the visitor center to the campground. There is about 1/2 mile just on the side of the road which wasn't great. We had limited time so we had to head back. I think a better hike given our time constraint might have been starting at the campground and walking around the lake a bit.
