Although the lake and views are great the loose stones make it risky for hiking. More ideal for the Jeeps or off road vehicles.

We always complete this trail once a year. this time took our JK with 4" lift and 37s, open diffs. the V notch has definitely gotten much harder to navigate since last year. if you are not extremely experienced, best to go around the obstacle on the left.

Harder than expected, some really nice obstacles to figure out. Not for a bone stock Jeep!

Did this hike on 9/5 with some friends and two dogs. There were a lot of jeeps on the road, so we would occasionally have to go around or let them pass. Gorgeous views at the top of a lake and a waterfall. It was a pretty hot day so make sure you have enough water for you and your fur friends.

Very few people. Would be a tough ATV trail. Saw 3 vehicles, and 2 were broken down. Trail is tough mainly because of the rocks. Several sections of the road was covered in water. There is a trail around each. The last half mile was tough. Scenery was great - view down entire valley. Lake at top was a beautiful mountain lake.

We hiked this on 8/15/2020. Pretty easy trail due to the 4x4 road. Didn’t make it to the upper lake. Wildflowers were beautiful.

Lots of cool things to see like the mill! Lots of streams and waterfalls. Ends at a large summit lake lots of jeeps and 4wd cars out there. Just one or two spots that some cars were having trouble with but for the most part looks fun to drive up! Enjoy the views!

Bushwhacking for days!! Lol jk, there are a few spots you have to move around some sitting water and a few spots of run off, but overall gorgeous hike! Started a little late (8:30) and only passed a few people but by the time I got back to the lot before noon it was full. Lots of sun exposure after the first mile so it can get hot. Is a 4x4 road so it’s pretty clear overall. Please remember to pack in and pack out, picked up lots of trash. Wildflowers are breathtaking, let’s not ruin it with litter.

Left at 7:00a.m to beat the Colorado crowds. Did not see a single person on the way up which wasn’t surprising as this trail appears to be geared toward ATVs/off road vehicles. Rocky path, with a bit of water. The footpath leading up to the lake was difficult to follow and definitely more difficult to find/ follow coming down. BUT the lake view was well worth it. Serene and peaceful.

Hiked this stunner of a trail on Friday July 17th 2020. Started at 10a and only saw 2 people on the trail the entire roundtrip. We had a plan to try to make it up to McNamee peak or Traver peak once at the lake however that did not happen...really no trail at all to make an attempt. The trail out to Wheeler lake is a ATV road so quite rocky and really impressive to see some off-road vehicles make it over some of the rocks! We clocked 3.5 miles to the lake and the views are amazing along the way of the surrounding mountains and meadows. Definitely lots of water at times on the trail however easily circumvented through the brush on the sides. We took a 4k video of our hike, feel free to check it out on YouTube so you know what to expect. https://youtu.be/VTRDLh21mow Wildflowers are amazing! Lots of mosquitoes at the lake so either bring bug spray or only stay for a short period of time. Really cool waterfall up there of the snow melt draining into the lake. The beginning portion of the hike is partial shade but about 80% is in the sun so dress accordingly. This hike was the highlight of our CO trip...an absolute must if you are looking for something challenging but not terrible in terms of crazy elevation!

Did this no problem in my 2020 Rubicon with 37’s. If you have anything less than that or no lift you will scrape a fair amount. Got some Colorado pin stripes on the trail too. Overall great ride with a few fun spots and a lot of water crossings!

Awesome trail, the trail has several difficult obstacles, great history, amazing big country, water crossings, couldn’t have asked for a better day. Couple snow drifts before lake, but we were able to get through fine. I currently run 37” tires, open diffs...Probably in top 3 so far...good times!!

Did this on foot. Lots of water on the trail still. Too much to cross safely about 3 miles in, so we turned around before the lake. Really beautiful hike still.

Turned around after 1.2 miles. Between other hikers reporting thigh deep snow and 8 4x4’s using up the trail, we decided it wasn’t worth it to continue.
