*** Due to COVID-19 restrictions the canyon is only open on weekdays one half hour before sunrise to one half hour before sunset. Additionally the "last chance" water fountain has been turned off, pack in water or be prepared to properly sterilize. Hiked the trail yesterday, which being as it was my first time I'll have to note it's really a hard pack road all the way up until it meets to Colorado Trail. the first mile or so is kind of meh until you plunge into the canyon and it only gets better from there. I arrived early in the morning, around 6:15 and there was still ample parking but already a lot of large groups getting ready to step off. The trail isn't very steep, and there's rest stops about every mile and a half or so to get you out of the blazing sun and into pavilion shade. I went looking for Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep but unfortunately didn't see any despite a a little bit of glassing and plenty of walking. For a trail as popular as this I was very surprised at how clean it was. Thank you Coloradans.

This out and back trail is great for bike riding. The "out" portion is approximately 6 miles with a slight incline, but you don't notice it too much. The turn around point is the Dam, and going back is mostly at a decline which is nice. The trail follows the river/creek, doesn't offer much shade, but does provide multiple bathrooms and places to stop and take a break along the way, and plenty of beautiful scenery to look at. You might get to see some big horn sheep on your visit as well. Note that the water fountain near the entrance was turned off when I visited on 6/25 so bring your own water.

6/19/20 – Beautiful scenery along the South Platte River through the Waterton Canyon. I would consider this more of a walk than a hike. The incline is so slight that you’re not even aware of it. I only saw a few small Bighorn Sheep but did get to see the infamous blonde black bear that has recently been spotted in the area. He was pretty far up the mountain, but nevertheless, cool to see. I started on the trail at 8AM on a Friday morning. It wasn’t overly busy at that time, but traffic had definitely increased when I finished at 11AM. Lots of bikers, but the trail is wide, making it easy to share. Thankfully, I went on a cool, overcast day. Just be aware this trail has no shade, so you may want to avoid a hot, sunny day if you plan to walk the whole thing.

I can't believe this trail is closed. How much more punishment will we have to endure. Its a wonderful slice of Colorado in a 6 mile strip. A scenic river, canyon, wildlife and a wonderful places to pull off and enjoy the scenery.

Open this up already. This is government overreaching.

This road is not the best hike we have in Colorado but the ease of it is a great quick bike ride or a place to enjoy the river and big horn sheep. The shutdown of places where people go for exercise is ridiculous.

Great trail for biking. It's a bit difficult on the way out, but the ride back makes it worth the work.

The trail is pretty clear of ice and snow, with just a few muddy patches. There were quite a few bighorns on the trail today.

Not too muddy today. The parking lot was muddy, but once on the trail itself the mud was minimal and easily avoidable.

Gorgeous hike for Valentine's day. As mentioned you are hiking down a service road, they had it plowed but it was a little muddy due to the recent snow. Only made it to the Mountain Lion pavilion (3 miles in) before we turned back but still got to see some awesome views and the Big Horn Sheep herd.

Fantastic day! A great walk right now to avoid snow and mush on trails. Windy in some sections but the beauty of the Canyon and peaceful walk was one worth doing!

Biked the canyon today. Road is dry and clear the whole way. Four rams came down a hillside on the way back and drew plenty of attention as they butted heads. Sunny, clear, great day.

Wonderful day for this walk. Saw about 2 dozen big horn sheep, 2 eagles, many types of ducks, blue birds, black capped chickadees, and a rabbit. I waked to the Colorado trail trailhead for a serene lunch. Super great day!
