Not sure where Alltrails got their map from, but I started at the water treatment plant on Margo Lane in Lake City, not at the end of Park Creek Rd. This seems to add a couple miles and several hundred feet to the listed distance/elevation online. The first couple miles are brutal due to the rapid elevation gain, but the aspens and views of Lake City are quite nice. The difficulty of the hike, makes getting to the lake very rewarding. When I hiked the trail, there were stretches about 2.5-3 miles in where there were several trees fallen across the trail, and the trail itself wasn't too clear. Eventually the trail meets up with a 4WD road that leads to the lake. The lake sneaks up on you as you finish with a short uphill stretch. You arrive on the west bank, but there is a trail north extending around to the far side of the lake.

Difficult climb. About 4.75 miles to Lake. First 2 miles steep uphill, first on rocky switchbacks then through very pretty aspen groves. Emerge at top in meadow, then have 3 more miles to Lake. Don’t be fooled, the first body of water you come to, on your right through aspen, is NOT The Lake. Keep walking until You will come to a Jeep trail and will follow that to the Lake. Very pretty lake. We got a late start and could not stay long. Definitely a great hike.

Prepare for a solid 2 miles of steep uphill hiking! We took quite a few short breaks throughout this part of the hike to make it more bearable. You hike through some gorgeous Aspens, which helps you forget that you're climbing straight uphill. After the Aspens, you come out into a meadow with beautiful wild flowers and a spectacular view of the mountains. Great place to reenergize yourself for the rest of the hike. The last few miles are still pretty difficult in that it's mostly uphill, though it's not as steep in most parts and there's more even hiking along the way to give your legs a bit of a break. Again lots a beautiful scenery though this. We reached the lake in about 2hrs45mins. Once we got there, we ate lunch and rested about an hour before beginning the journey back down. We really enjoyed the hike and would highly recommend it!

This is one of our favorite "local" trails, but it is very strenuous. The trail starts off climbing and does not relent for a while. Be sure to park at the water treatment plant, walk up the road toward a private residence, then turn right to access the trail. The views are spectacular along the way. Visit this trail during the winter to do some snow shoeing if you are up for a challenge.

I'm going back a year on rating this - sorry! Hike is a bit steep at times, but easy enough with a good walking stick or trekking poles. Lovely aspen groves, well maintained trails and periodic bowls with wonderful vistas of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The lake is so beautiful with a small cabin at one end. I highly recommend this hike.
