This trail would be nearly perfect for a trail run if not for the mountain bike traffic - which is plentiful. But the bikes are courteous (watch your headphones for the downhill bikes approach quickly and always yield to uphill bikers and anyone really). Filtered sun will melt the snow and dry the trail quickly. The view at the top of ponderosa loop is awesome. Also the parking lot can fill on nice days.

1-17-20: Clear most of the way. Hit some patches of ice in a few spots but didn’t need spikes. Very windy but still saw turkey and deer out feeding.

A nice moderate hike. Just a few slightly muddy spots, still some snow on the loop. No need for spikes. Beautiful day.

Spent the day (11/29/19) cross country skiing this loop. Amazing!! Perfect snow and so much fun! It was so great to have a local trail with enough snow for skiing :)

A nice long hike. Starting at 11:00 and ending at 2:00, it was pretty sun exposed and I thought there would be more shade considering it winds through the ponderosa pines. And while the trail was rocky at times it was very well maintained and the signage along the trail was excellent. It's a long steady climb up the Wapiti Trail, then it evens out a bit along the Ponderosa Loop. The scenic overlook midway through the Ponderosa Loop was beautiful. Passed a handful of hikers and trail runners. The trail seems popular with mountain bikers and all were very friendly and considerate.

I ran this yesterday. Most of the snow has melted from the recent storm. The parking was pretty full since it was 50+ degrees out. There were several hikers going both directions. This must be a popular MTB spot because they were coming from every direction. Ponderosa Loop is nice and flat so it makes for a good treat after climbing 1000+ ft. My Strava clocked this route at 6.69 miles.

Great low country hike all year round. Beautiful right after snow, nice view of the red buttes near Lyons, views of Meeker and Long’s Peak on a clear day. Lots of deer in the area and has one of the largest elk migrations. Should really be called the wapiti trail to the ponderosa loop to correlate with signage.

Really awesome trail we hadn’t heard about before! Quite a few mountain bikers passing through on a Sunday afternoon but awesome views. Also there’s a short 2.3mi loop from the parking lot going the other direction that is rolling hills.

This trail is very peaceful and hiked it after Thanksgiving. Lot of trail runners but the reason I'm giving it three stars is because most of the trail is very rocky and the views were not spectacular. It's not a bad trail, by all means, get out there and enjoy yourself, I just don't think it's a five star trail.

No dogs. Cool trail not too technical. A couple nice spots with a view and not too busy. Good amount of sun on a chilly day.

Second time on this trail, though this was my first time running it. Ran 8 miles up through Wapiti and Ponderosa Loop to finish back down Wapiti. I maybe passed 7-8 people on bikes who were all polite and courteous on trail. Course this is relative to your skill level, but this is not a very technical trail. It is mostly dirt with packed in rocks and only a handful of moderately steepish section. I am planning on this being my weekly longer run for sure! So peaceful out here!

Trail running was challenging due to rocky trail. Be prepared to do a lot of hopping. I was rewarded with a beautiful scenic view on the Ponderosa loop extension. Saw 6 hikers and 5 mountain bikers in the 8 mile run. I will do this trail again before returning to Texas.

Heavy heavy MTN bike use. This is one of the most popular MTN bike trails in the county. As a matter of fact it's really only 1 of 3 descent MTN bike trails in the whole county, hence its HEAVY fast MTN bike use. And if you ride, it's phenomenal trail.
