During the winter, the gate to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area is closed. Visitors must park at the parking lot just outside the gate, shown as the trailhead here. Due to this winter closure, this trial is often used as a snowshoe route. This trail starts outside of the gate, so visitors to not have to pay the entry fee if they start at this trailhead. Although dogs are allowed in this area during the summer, they are not during the winter.

Shoed the snowshoe trail on a snowy morning in February. The trail was well marked on trees, easy to follow on the ground and well-packed but definitely need snowshoes. Plenty of parking still in the winter lot despite a bunch of cars there and rarely passed other snowshoe-ers or xc skiers on the trail. The forest is beautiful in the snow.

Windy, and ended up taking the road to the snow shoe trail up to brainard lake. Glad we went early cause there was zero parking when we got back. was able to use the snow shoes

Windy but walkable, snow shoes, or skies. The side trails require snow shoes.

Great way to hike to Brainard lake. Patches of snow on the trail making it muddy. No snow at the lake.

Hiked this Sunday 9/16/18 when I parked in the lot before the entrance to Brainard. I was on the way to Mitchell Lake and thought I'd get some views along the Waldrop. It is really in the trees and shady. Didn't see much sky, let alone views. I was happy to get to Brainard Lake and on to Mitchell Lake and get out of the tree cover!

So much fun. Almost all in the trees. Not very difficult. Definitely doing this one again.
