This hike is on the Snowmass ski resort. Park in the parking garage in the Snowmass village, then walk up to the trail head at the base of the Elk Camp gondola (approx. 200-300 yards). The trail is moderately steep but about 70% of it is in the forest (in the shade) and very beautiful. As you ascend, you will occasionally hike under the gondola. I strongly believe the reported mileage of 1.9 miles is overstated. Hiking at a very easy pace (our 4 person group just arrived two days before from home (elevation 700 feet)) it took us just 1.5 hours to reach the Elk Camp restaurant. We took the gondola back down the mountain. Be sure not to hike on the mountain bike trails, as the bikes fly down the mountain and will run you over! Lunch at the Elk Camp restaurant was great!

From the Elk Camp restaurant, you have the option of taking one of two trails higher up the mountain. The Sierra Club trail is a beautiful 1.9 mile (mileage is overstated!) loop that is about 60% in the forest. It took our group less than one hour to complete the loop. At the "Y" in the trail, if you go right, the trail is steep (in places) and in the sun for the first 30 minutes. Then the traverse and descent are in the forest (in the shade). If you go left at the "Y", the first part of your hike will be in the shade and second part in the sun. We did not take the summit trail as it was too long (estimated time RT is 3 hours) and steep.

The Apple maps and google direction to the trail head is screwy at the beginning. Drive past the residential homes and they’re ample parking. Scenery decent, good family hike, some of the route first mile (and last mile) on a service road which SkiCo uses to shuttle workers up to elk camp.

We continued along rabbit run with the dog and a 9 and 2 11 y/o. Probably classify as moderate to easy. Definitely easier than starting at base village.
