Had good views of the Mesa at top elevation.

Lovely, moderate network of trails.

great hike this morning, pretty overcast. a lot of the trails on the further back have a lot of packed down snow, I was fine with trekking poles but you may be more comfortable with some spikes. Good little loop I'll be back to explore this area some more this summer

Very well maintained trail for running! Minimal snow/ice on a few parts of the trail but mostly clear given the global warming 70 degree day on feb. 2. Nice job Boulder county!

It was a nice hike. Should have worn hiking boots with all of the small rocks jutting out of the ground. Beautiful when you reach the top of Mesa and are heading toward upper big bluestern.

Great trail. Easy incline, 1/2 wooded, 1/2 open with some lovely views of the Flatiron’s. Great rail conditions. Saw lots of runners - I might even consider running this one as the 4.4 was a great length.

Great trail for after Christmas activity. Few icy spots. Not busy today

Great trail meandering through different types of vegetation from windswept fields to forests at the feet of the mountains. Right now the colors are simply fantastic.

Open at the beginning then it gets more wooded.

very nice trail with a variety of vegetation and scenery. lots of people though, and some fairly steep sections .

Start here early in summer. By 7:50 AM the parking was full and the trailhead across the highway was 90% full. Otherwise a pretty easy hike.

Nice easy moderate hike with beautiful scenery. Please be advised that we encountered a rattle snake that was sunning on the edge of the trail about a mile in from the start. Thankfully we didn’t step on it or startle it, so we didn’t have any issues. We were out on Wednesday, July 10th at about 9am when we saw the rattle snake.

This is a great, quick hike with some good views and lots of flowers! Just a note though that the signpost for the Towhee trail does indicate ‘no dogs’ - instead I just continued on Mesa and it all worked out. Not much shade at the beginning/end of the loop.

Veeeeeery wet and muddy at the moment, but otherwise a nice little trail!

This was a nice hike. We cut it short and ended up not doing all of it. We did 4.5 miles without doing the shadow canyon loop part. The views were nice but not amazing. The beginning part doesn’t have much shade but the middle section has some. The parking lot fills up fast so be prepared to wait for a spot and it is a paid lot so bring cash. I opted for the annual pass which you buy online and then you don’t need the sticker on your car.

Sweeping views, tons of mud from the snowmelt. We altered the route and stuck to the Mesa Trail and ended up doing about 6 miles there and back. Towhee is not open to dogs, but you can stay on Mesa to rejoin the loop.
