The trail starts at the shuttle bus stop. The road to the Fern Lake Trailhead is closed, so be ready to hike an extra .7 miles each way. We hiked with Yaktax on our boots, and it was very doable. Packed powder the whole way. Great hike!!

The trail starts at the closed gate and appeared to be included in the total mileage listed on the app even though the GPS coordinates tell you the trailhead starts further down the road past the gate. The section up to the pool was mostly dirt with a few sections that still had some snow pack but were easily passable. We continued on to Cub Lake and found our micro spikes and poles to be very helpful. There were a few rocky sections after the 2nd bridge where there wasn’t as much snow. We saw a few groups of ppl on our way back down who didn’t have poles or spikes and were sliding all over the place. We saw 3 moose and an elk.

Super fun. Couldn’t finish cuz we had a 2 & 3 yr old. Also had to walk .8 miles down the closed road to get to the trail. We’ll try it again tomorrow. My wife and older 2 kids enjoyed it. Barely any ice/snow.

Completed this trail September 18, 2019. There Are several parking lots leading up to this trail head. I parked at the second one before the trail head. Which had me walk and additional .7 miles. Parking at the trail head is limited to maybe 15-16 cars. So take your chances? Overall very nice trail and easy.

I could not find the actual leg we did listed in the AllTrails list. We did Bear Lake Trailhead to Fern Lake trailhead, a very popular one-way 11 mile hike which many people say is one of the best day hikes in all of the Rocky Mountains. Park the car at Fern Lake Trailhead and take the shuttle to the Bear Lake Trailhead (change Shuttles at the park and ride), and hike down to Fern Lake TH and your car. Or park at the Park and Ride and take the Shuttle to Bear Lake Trailhead, do the hike, then catch the shuttle to the Park and Ride. That is probably best. Going from Fern Lake Trailhead to Bear Lake Trailhead is much more climbing as Bear Lake is much higher, so it is best to start from the Bear Lake Trailhead. The trail is extremely well marked along the way. It is world-class beautiful. Starting from Bear Lake, you climb 1500 feet for 2.5 miles, then it is all down hill to Fern Lake Trailhead. We are 62 years old but fit hikers. It took us about 6 hours because I stopped a lot to shoot and I carried a lot of camera gear. I am a photographer. Many shots here. https://www.flickr.com/photos/139148982@N02/albums/72157709930300111 We were rained on very hard for almost 2 hours at the start. Did the hike on 10 August, 2019. All Trails Needs to add a trail called "Bear Lake Trailhead to Fern Lake Trailhead". My recoding was bad because GPS was in and out due to heavy cloud cover. Do this hike. It is the best day hake in RMNP.

This trail offers the roaring sound of the river; many different wildflowers; and big rocks to admire. The pool is a great place to sit and rest while taking in the power of the river. It was a really easy and very enjoyable hike with our 6 and 9 yr old.

fantastic hike with kids (5, 6, 9). I especially loved the huge rocks at the end that feel like walking through a canyon. Very busy and parking involved some serious stalking of hikers leaving, but chalk that up to a late start. Overall great hike.

Very enjoyable trail with lots of clear markings. The inclines might seem hard in the beginning but are over before you know. It's perfectly possible for a moderate hiker
