An old mining facility still in decent condition located well above treeline. From the closure gate continue hiking along the road past the Dauntless mine. After ascending a hill the road will curve to the right (watch for arrows made from rocks in the road to help you). There are several spur roads off of the main one, however most don't take you far before you realize your on the wrong path. You will see on the hillside above you the Hilltop mine and the road leading to it. This is your destination. The road passes around a small pond and then does a switchback up the last steep slope to the mine. As you go up the switchbacks look downhill back towards Leavick and you will see the remains of the arial tram towers that once carried ore from the Hilltop Mine all the way down to Leavick. Follow the road between two old bunk houses (one still standing) then come up from the backside of the Hilltop Mine to view it. If you look up to the saddle above you will see a couple of the remaining telegraph poles and wires.

Easy to follow trail. This is the beginning of Mount Sherman and the Dauntless mines.

Beautiful trail, still packed with snow. Hiking boots were fine, but snowshoes would have been better. We only went as far as Leavick, had a picnic with an incredible view. Definitely plan to return and make the rest of the trek.

8/4/19 This trail is essentially the beginning of the 14er Mount Sherman, the first mile or so. So know that it shares a parking area that can get very full. It’s a very busy mountain, lots of people! The road to get to the TH is brutal. We made it in our Mazda 3 rental, but it was tough. Recommend AWD vehicle. Lots of families and youngsters around. Seems like a great area family outing. The snow on this area of the trail is mostly melted off but there are still some areas of snow higher on the path to Mount Sherman. Beautiful area, snow melt streams, small lake, wild flowers. We saw some mountain goats when we got to the area before the ridge hike.

Beautiful vistas, lots of the old mining ruins and equipment to explore. Mostly rocky path, only a few steep sections with loose rock. Sections of snow were deep, ended up to my knees once but mostly easy enough to traverse in hiking boots. Not sure about getting to the old hilltop mine without poles and at least crampons. We got most of the way there, then a few of our group got partway to the mine and slid down :)

Beautiful! My fiancé and our 3 children hiked to the ridge line at about 13,200 in the early afternoon and turned around...the hike is wonderfully scenic, without a ton of traffic.

Made it to just over 13,000 feet. The winds were about 40 mph, so had to turn back. Would love to try to make it to summit when winds aren’t so rough.
