Getting There

Note: All dogs must be on a leash while on park trails. The top of the Mesa dog park is the only off leash area. This is a high volume area so please pick up after dogs and dispose of any waste and trash properly. Palmer Park is one of the largest park/open spaces in the city of Colorado Springs. It contains excellent facilities: dog park, horse stable, riding trails, picnic areas, and hiking trails. The four mile loop that circumnavigates the top of the mesa in the center of the park. The Templeton Trail begins and ends at the Yucca Flats trailhead. Visitors often choose to hike clockwise on this trail because the trail signs are easier to read when moving in this direction.

Tips: 1. No toilets up here. 2. No water source. It's only a four mile hike, but if you want a drink, you'll need to carry water. 3. This trail is open year round. In the winter, snow accumulates on the north facing parts of the trail; so be careful as you approach these sections.

Directions: Austin Bluffs Pkwy to N Academy Blvd. Go south on Academy to Maizeland Rd. Turn right (east) on Maizeland, go about a quarter mile to the park entrance on the right (Paseo Rd). Proceed into the park, past the athletic fields and the dog park. Go up the hill 1 mile; as the paved road turns left, turn right onto a dirt road (look for sign to Yucca Flats) that then curves left. Follow this to the end. The cul de sac at the end is the trailhead. The beginning of the hike, as I've outlined it is on the left side of the circle, about seven o'clock as you're looking toward the end of the cul de sac.

Cool hike with beautiful views of Colorado Springs. It is very easy to get off trail if you’re not following the map.

LOST KEY... Great trail as always!! This is my go to in town. If you hiked it today and found a single car key in the middle of the trail, please email me at jncm96@gmail.com.

This was a fun hike. It was a little tough and I do suggest some good trail runners or boots. But, the views were fantastic!

I loved this hike. Palmer Park has some great trails scrolling the sides of the cliff. Recommended for you and your pup.

Picked this trail up for a quick hike two weeks ago. Really cool area with lots of rocks for you to take a minute for yourself and enjoy the view. Would recommend downloading the map because I did end up off trail a couple times and needing to backtrack a bit.

Awesome trail!! Very easy to get off the trail however, as it is poorly marked. Had to have my map open almost the whole time! Otherwise beautiful!

What a gem and frankly a big surprise! Views of the city, mountains, Castle Rock, and basically a different perspective from the trails up in the mountains. Beautiful little loop trail that gives you great views throughout as you hike through relatively rocky terrain. Mileage is about 4+ with some ups and downs but minimal elevation change. I saw a few bikers but the terrain is definitely better suited to hikers. Try it in both directions!

Great hike as we begin the 2020 hiking adventures. Trail is amazing with it's varied terrain in and out of tree cover. I only give four stars because it is very poorly marked. Trail maintenance signage is definitely needed in the Palmer Park area. Thankfully the alltrails app helped me to get back on the trail a couple of times!

Rocky and steep in spots. Not a lot of people on the trail today so it was easy to maintain social distancing.

Amazing trail. Dog (put on a leach ) and family friendly. May get lost but so worth it. Lots of rocks so make sure you have good shoes. I’m sure after quarantine it’ll be crowded. Use the map or a map if you’re not familiar with the trail it’s not well marked AT ALL

Beautiful views but horribly labeled need anymore markers. My 3.7 trail was 4.4 because of many wrong ways. Had a few moments of panic being lost.

Good trail, very little shade. It’s not marked the greatest either, had to check map frequently, but will definitely do again.

Great trail, technical with areas to run and climb. I really enjoy this and plan to work out here frequently. The south end of the trail is a little hard to navigate as it converges with other trails. Plus in the middle of the city I don’t have to fear a wild animal attack. Colorado Springs is blessed fo have this.
