Start at the last campsite at Temple Ridge picnic and camping area. Follow the sign for the Temple Trail. You'll begin with a fairly steep descent into the canyon. At the bottom of the canyon, turn right to follow Grape Creek. The fairly obvious trail will have you cross Grape Creek -- be careful, in high water you may have to wade across. Follow the trail into a side canyon, which will take you up some old rock steps and into a natural amphitheater. Legend has it, Native Americans used to hold ceremonies here. Please note you need a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead.

This was a gorgeous Christmas Eve hike! The Temple is such a special place. We had the entire canyon to ourselves! All three dogs were able to join us up in the Temple, but not all dogs will enjoy the scrambling beginning with the water fall section.

The Bureau of Land Management has done really nice work to improve their section of road. The Cañon City section is a bit tougher. Reading some reviews, we brought our Yukon with body and suspension lift running 37s and it was total overkill. We would have been fine in our AWD Murano and saved a few bucks in gas!

We were able to walk across the thick of Grape Creek, but there’s also a dry-ish crossing just below a beaver damn at present, downstream from the mouth of Temple Canyon.

Drive a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead. The road through the park is in very rough shape.

Definitely rewarding getting into the canyon! We had a rental car, and had to stop a mile+ from the actual trailhead (due to needing clearance/ road not being maintained) but once we found it, enjoyed the hike! Crossing through the creek wasn’t bad today, water ran just below my knee, and I’m about 5’4”. The ascent out of the canyon definitely kept the heart rate up, but went quickly. My Fitbit clocked in at 1.4 miles to the temple from the trail head. Happy hiking! :)

Great short hike from an awesome campground! We had no idea it was there and were amazed by the temple at the end. Wading through the creek was fun, if not cold.
