This is a beautiful trail. Yes, it is muddy from the horse traffic, but well worth it. Bring an old pair of hiking boots and embrace the muck. Because it gets so much rain, the wildflowers are tall and plentiful. The aspen forest is full of huge trees and there is a lake that is completely covered with grass. There are excellent views of the Castles at the beginning and equally impressive views of the Anthricites as you continue up the trail. Fall is a wonderful time to do this hike. The Castles in the fall are breathtaking, and this trail offers the best views of it and it is drier. Once you hike up the steep hill at the trailhead, the trail mellows out into a much more gradual ascent.
