Backpacking

If backpacking into the basin,... be prepared. This wasn’t an easy hike. We came in from Purgatory and dropped our packs off in the basin to get up to Eolus/North Eolus and back down to basin before dark. We started about 8:30 and got back down to the basin around 9,... I wouldn’t recommend this. If I were to do it differently, I’d hike in to the basin and overnight and then attempt the peaks with fresh legs on day 2. We tried to squeeze this in with time constraints, but the early September snow deterred all we met that day from actual summits although some came very close at Sunlight. The elevation with heavy packs is brutal. There is still snow on the catwalk between Eolus peaks and snow at summit it Sunlight caused a few to skip worm hole and come down. I’d wait 5 days or so with the snow melting fast before attempting again. Trails!

BackpackingGreat!

This is a long hike but completely worth it. I backpacked it with my wife and college aged son. We departed Purgatory on Thursday a few weeks ago and hiked to Chicago Basin that day. Beautiful river and mountains Views. On Friday we simmered Eolus and North Eolus. Spectacular summit on a sunny day. A little technical at the top. The views are spectacular. That Friday late afternoon we returned to the base along the animas river and camped then returned to Purgatory Saturday. It was a long hike but worth the effort. Mountain goats are beautiful and friendly. Make sure you are in shape and prepared for this hike. Being over 50 it did take some effort. For my son it was fairly simple. Three years ago we took the train and went to the basin but were rained out. So make sure the weather is accommodating or tracked early morning to summit. If to do over I would strongly recommend the train to Needleton then spend two days summiting the peaks. But now when I am at Purgatory and I look out and see Eolus and can say I have been there and back. And that was the challenge I wanted to achieve. So for me it was a great experience. I wish the same for you. Hiked

Pretty cool stuff! Given the risk of late afternoon thunder, did this in 2.5 days - 1 days backpacking to the basin, 1 day all the peaks plus going back to needleton junction, and then back to the car. Gorgeous, challenging, it's one of the best hike! Be aware that this includes Sunlight (class 4), Eolus (class 3), North Eolus ("Class 3 but...come on, that's a joke), Windom ("Class 2, but surprisingly hard/annoying for a class 2, maybe I took the wrong route)

Truly amazing! A long hike in without the train, but worth it. Pay close attention on the descent from sunlight - lots of places to get turned around.

A friend and I completed these 14er’s in 2016. To date, this has been my favorite Colorado 14er experience. The train ride in/out, hiking up into the basin, the constant incredible views, beautiful wildflowers, I could go on and on. Very hard work (at least for me) but worth every bit of it.

This trail is beautiful and easy . You are hiking down first into the canyon so you have to hike up and out . We only went in to the creek and back so 2 miles .
