Nice, easy hike on a fairly wide (but still isolated) dirt road, not too muddy. The aspens are just starting to turn

RunningBlowdown

Ran this in early September, fine 4.6m~ with about 650 ft gain. Turnaround works at the 10th Mountain Division High Lonesome Hut. The run was fine, but lots of blowdown and hot already at 8:30am. This would be a better ski than hike/run. ‘Easy’ rating makes sense.

Hiking

Nice wooded walk on closed-to-vehicles dirt road. Includes undulating hills that make for a varied ~5 mile out and back. “End” is determined by you with a sighting of the High Lonesome hut (a house) being a perfectly good marker.

HikingNo shade

Nice, easy trail, with a slow ascent and descent. Probably room for about 7-8 cars at the trailhead - we grabbed the last spot during mid-morning, but the trail doesn't take that long, so there will be turnover. The walk was beautiful, with lots of trees, wildflowers, and butterflies However, it was very hot - there is practically no shade anywhere, since the path is so wide, and so many of the trees are dead.

The trail was a nice and easy trail and the paths were mostly dry. It's a good hike for kids and the end has a lovely meadow. the hut was closed without calling the owner first.

Nice hike. The hut isn’t a hut though. It’s a house on private property. Little odd.

Very wide trail leading through a good amount of forest. Plenty of shady areas along the trail to catch a quick break. Eventually the trail leads to a nice creek/river. We were surprised to see a cow moose and calf on our way back in a clearing. Went on a Tuesday and only saw one other family on the trail. Was a very beautiful hike.

Hiked this with my 10yo. Double track trail, smooth, and scenic. Rolling hills and forest made it feel like you were still adventuring, despite the wide trail. Went on a Tuesday morning and we had the place to ourselves. Saving this trail for when my older parents come out.

went with my three sons—21, 8, 4–and had a nice time. we didn’t make it all the way to the hut because there was too much snow and the boys weren’t dressed for it. it was wet, muddy, and snowy in spots. it’s the width of a fire road for the most part which you may like but may not. no great views to speak of on the trail. we saw and heard a tree collapse during the hike which was pretty amazing. don’t love the elevation profile—i prefer out-and-back trails that start at the bottom and the turnaround is at the top. especially with young kids—that way the second half goes faster than the first. anyway it was a nice trail.
