Colorado Butte With a Beautiful View Just east of the Rampart Range section of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains the plains limestone buttes rise randomly across the plains. One of the largest of these rocky islands is Spruce Mountain, situated west of I-25 and north of the small town of Palmer Park, CO. Spruce Mtn. provides a delightful opportunity to enjoy views of Pikes Peak, Rampart Range, the Greenland Open Space, and the Palmer Divide. Douglas County has provided and excellent trailhead which includes a toilet. From the trailhead you can ascend to the top of the butte by a long shallow trail or by a short steep trail. The longer trail adds about a half mile to your hike. On the top of the butte is a shaded loop trail that allows for a tranquil walk among pine and fir groves. Punctuating the stillness, in the spring and summer, is a riot of wildflowers. The trail eventually takes you to Windy Point, where you can look over the edge at the valley 200 ft below, or look out to the south and marvel at Pike's Peak.

Easy trail with a gradual incline. The views and rock formations make this trail worth it! Shade through out the trail.I will be doing this one again for sure. However I am expected to pick up my dog poop then people should have to do something about their horse poop! It was everywhere on the trail, disgusting and disappointing!

I definitely recommend this trail! It's very easy to follow and has some very pleasant views. There are some great rock formations along the way!

Would recommend this trail scenic and enough elevation to make it a workout. I go around to the right north side of the Mesa and up the service road It is steeper climb going up to the top this way. Have fun there is a picnic table up top to enjoy some peace and quiet.

I do not understand why people leave there poop bags all over. Also if they have to pick up dog poop then why do the horse riders get to leave there horse poop ALL OVER the trail. Horse poop ALL OVER is the worse complaint I have.

9-2 we encountered a bear on the back side of the mountain today near the open space heading up the fire road. Definitely in his territory this evening so we headed back through the open space. Neat encounter but avoided being bear dinner. Still one of my favorite hikes in the area!

Always a nice hike with good views.

Great hike/walk, not difficult at all. Out of the parking lot we took the trail to the right towards Eagle Pass in order to get to the main Spruce Mountain trail and then went CLOCKWISE up the mountain. It add an additional 1/2 mile to the hike BUT it is a wonderful exceptionally gradual ascent, literally just about ANYONE could do it going CLOCKWISE. We were on the trail by 8:30 and had the trail mostly to ourselves until we were almost more than halfway complete. When we got to the parking lot it was packed. Plenty of shade BUT on a hot day there are parts that could be hot.

Beautiful views from up there, and so close to civilization! That service road in the back is a beast (going up)! Will certainly do it again!

Hikes are relatively easy and pretty good for hot day ... nice, shady spots!

Really nice hike with terrific views and beautiful wild flowers. As others have said go early. There is shade but it gets very hot. Felt like there was an excessive amount of horse droppings in certain areas. But the experience is tremendous!

Hiked on Eagle pass which was lovely early in the morning. UP!! the service road (ugh) to the main trail. Piece of cake after that! Great scenic views of Pikes Peak and the valley. Flowers are finally here.

Love this trail. We finally made it. We tried to hike it 3 times before today and each time we get rained out. If you go mid day look at the weather report not a place you want to be when lightning starts to strike under a lot of trees.

One of our favorite hikes as it is close by. Beautiful views at the top. Fairly easy. The parking lot tends to fill quickly on pretty days. It can be biked or hiked which is nice and dogs are allowed. Horses are often on the trail which is fun for the kids. My kids (5-18) love it and we hike it often.

Went during a cloudy cool June day, and only saw two people on trail. Sun came out right when we got there late afternoon. SO green. It was perfect.

Great hike to ease into things for the summer. Beautiful wildflowers and cliff views. A little bit crowded but still a great hike.

Trail in great conditions! We started 7:30 and it was awesome... almost empty trail. When we left, at 11, parking lot was full.

Go early by 9am or late day after 4pm to avoid the crying toddlers and tourists. it's an easy trail up to the top with rewarding, windy views. For an extended hike go up Eagle Pass trail and add in Spruce Mtn, OR, go up SM and descend via the Eagle Pass trail. Its a busy place with lots of dogs and families.

Great trail for a 2 hourish hike, nice overviews of the surrounding area. Trail is well maintained, just keep an eye out for horses and bikes.

Great morning on Spruce Mountain. Saw a few snakes and a couple of deer. If you bring a dog, please bring your furry friend water. This hike has No water feature.
