Beautiful hike! Unfortunately for me and my city car, we couldn’t make it up to the trailhead, so it added another ~1.3 miles each way. Spikes were really helpful. The lake was a serene stopping point; I had it to myself, minus the cute little birdies. Enjoyed this one a lot!
Was a fun track through the trees some pretty views mostly uphill on the way out mostly downhill on the way back.
mostly good pack, but you'll want snowshoes around Wheeler Junction
Hard first 2 Miles all up hill. Then great slow decline. Cool views at top, not a summit view
Beautiful hike today. Trail is snow packed with lots of surrounding un-tracked powder for those wanting to venture off on their on course. Used snowshoes since we were pulling kids on sleds but could have hiked trail with boots (w/micro-spikes would be ideal).
Great trail. Only had hiking boots and was fine. Not too many people, only a few hikers, snowshoers, and skiers
First half of trail was well maintained and like a winter wonderland. Only a few other hikers, dogs, and some skiers. Couldn’t find the second half of the loop when it split to Mohawk Lake. Think the snow was too deep! Hiked to mohawk instead which was beautiful! Only had hiking boots and they were fine. Many people with spikes though
Beautiful Sunday morning with very few other humans (maybe 10 all morning?)—a wonderful reprieve during the pandemic. We did the left side of the trail to Mayflower Lake—trail in great packed snow condition...I was in Sorel boots and had no problems. Views at the lake are pretty, not spectacular. This one is really about the trees and the solitude.
Great easy hike with a peaceful walk through the woods to a fantastic view in the open space with a small lake. Took the south leg through the woods to the open space and back. The trail was empty due to fresh snowfall. Even with the snow it was an easy hike. The north leg is just a gravel road.
Not too bad. Def go left / clockwise for the trail. It’s more scenic, you are in the trees vs staying right (all rocks/service road). It was pretty windy once you get to the lake trailhead. If you want to go to Mohawk lake, stay on the spruce creek trail and then loop around to go back down. Very crowded trailhead, lots of folks not wearing masks but if you go after 2 pm, you will encounter less people. Lots of folks (noobs) not having any water or jackets. Come prepared. I would say this is on the easy side of moderate but difficult for those not used to elevation. We completed this in about 2.5 hours but didn’t really stop. A good hike to get your blood going. Also, you drive up a dirt road with rocks. But if you decide to drive up further, past the trailhead for parking, be warned! You need a high clearance car. Lots of dips and good size rocks that will damage your car.
It’s a pretty area. Not a great payoff if your not planning on extending the hike and going up to Mohawk. The trail heads are not marked well. Especially if head up toward Mohawk lake. So many little offshoots and it’s too easy to end up climbing a good half mile before you realize your not headed in the right direction.
Definitely don't do the right part of the loop, it's just a dirt road covered in small to medium sized rocks that are uncomfortable to walk on. Other folks are recommending just doing the left half as an out-and-back which I assume is more pleasant, but I never did find that section when taking the trail counter-clockwise. The turnoffs in this direction are also not marked and are hard to follow. The road up to the parking area would be best suited to a vehicle with high clearance, the potholes are pretty bad. The volume of hikers was extremely high, so it was dismaying that no one seemed to think it might be considerate to wear a mask when passing in close proximity to so many people. The lake and waterfall were nice but not worth the hassle in my opinion.
Nice trail, some parts well marked, not many people wearing masks but at least courteous and move out of the way. Beautiful day
Gorgeous trail. Not very well marked though. We met a couple hikers who said the lake was one way, it wasn't. We found our selves on a very steep rocky trail that just ended. Would like to go back and go to the lake. Overall very pretty and well maintained.
Lovely trail with a good incline - we were carrying little ones, so we didn’t make it up to the lake. We’ll be back to do the whole trail and see the lake soon! Moderately busy (parking lot was full at 11am ona Tuesday).
