Do yourself a favor—DRIVE IN! If you park at the trail head, you have about a 1.5–2.0 mile hike ahead of you that will be uphill over a hard, rocky, road, with no views. Unknowingly, we did this, and by the time we got to the halfway point on the loop, our kids were too tired and make the ascent up to beautiful lakes and waterfalls and we had to turn back. All along the way, we see the smart people’s cars who had driven in the extra half-mile or mile and then strolled up the rest of the way. We ended up taking the loop the rest of the way around, walking back down through the slightly prettier wooded part of the loop, but still no views. If you do only the loop and don’t plan to go up to the lakes, prepare for a disappointing hike that is hard on your knees. Read all the really glowing reviews here, and you’ll notice they ALL went up the lakes, which isn’t even part of this hike! (See the Mohawk Lakes hikes for those).
