This trail goes through the forest and its edge along Moraine Park. During the fall, expect to see elk out in the open area and possibly among the trees. You can add the first part of Cub Lake Trail for a longer O/B hike or at the Cub Lake trailhead, walk to a shuttle pickup and get off at the Moraine Park Center and hike about .5 miles back down to where you parked.

Pretty flat and easy with some good views of the river running through the meadow and the mountains beyond. Unfortunately, no moose sightings (probably because it's summer). We did the full loop rather than in/out as it's about the same distance. It's just too far for what you get to see, but the best views are in the middle so there's not a great solution. Also, bring your bug spray...there were a LOT of mosquitoes!

We expanded this hike by first following the Big Thompson River along a trail by Bear Lake Rd, under the road and a little ways along Eagle Cliff Mt and then back. Saw a large elk herd in Moraine Park along with a few other bulls. We added part of Cub Lake trail up to Fern Lake Rd, took the shuttle to the Center, looked around there, and walk back down to where we parked. Did this hike in September.
