Easy hike and wildlife viewing opportunities. We saw a bear with 3 cubs and deer the day we went.

A Boulder go-to. An easy and gradual climb to the top with the occasional short-lived steep sections. I keep returning to this trail because you largely avoid the crowds that flock to other trails in the Boulder area (Chautauqua, NCAR, Mt. Sanitas trailheads just to name a few). This trail can be a little more trafficked during the weekends but even at its most crowded, it's not unbearable.

This is a beautiful hike. I followed a clockwise pattern going up via Skunk Canyon and coming down via Kohler Mesa. Skunk Canyon is a trail with a lot of switchbacks, so it provides for a fairly gradual ascent for most of the way. The views are gorgeous. The trail gets a tad steeper as you get closer to the Mesa Trail, but from that point on the rest of the loop is either flat or starts to descend. The Kohler Mesa trail is straighter and more direct. It's fairly rocky and has a lot of exposed tree roots, but a steady pace and good shoes or boots and you will be fine. Hiking a little later on a Saturday morning I passed a good number of people, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed by the crowds as you can feel on other trails around Boulder.

Beautiful, short hike with 9 year old. Half shade and half exposed. Elevation gives it a good workout.
