The trail begins at Second Creek Trailhead along Highway 40 into gentle climbing in the forested area along Second Creek before opening up to the north near treeline and ascending 800 vertical feet. At the top of the ridge you'll pass the old Second Creek Cabin A-frame, replaced by the newer Broome Hut. Dogs are not allowed at Broome Hut.

Beautiful snowshoe hike. Extremely well marked. Has a 10 to 15% grade for first mile. Mostly packed snow up to the hut. After the hut, trail not marked and mostly powder but easy to snowshoe. Incredible views.

So much powder! A steady incline, some parts steeper than others but the view was worth it. I wouldn’t recommend for beginner showshoers but a good challenging jaunt for intermediates. The parking is just past Berthoud Pass, directly off 40 and the trailhead is right there. No restrooms that I could see.

We snowshoed this a couple days after Christmas. Moderate traffic and plenty of snow. Views are worth the incline! Skiers and other hikers were great on the trails as well. Perfect for dogs and a quick hike.

Got up to the hut today. The first half mile is well-packed snow and it's ideal for snowshoeing. After that the trail is mostly fluffy powder and I sank in about a foot in a number of steps. It is easy to lose the trail and be sidetracked by all the new paths created by skiers. The view from the Broome Hut is worth the trek although there was some pretty serious wind up there today.

There was low snow when we visited in mid December so we just booted the whole way. A little harder closer to the top, but still beautiful!

A winter wonderland. I took the off-road route here and decided to go off the main trail a bit. Climbed the rocks that appeared once you are through the thick of the forest and was able to get to the top - terrific 360 views. I had snow boots on and hiked with really no problem (a little slick sometimes) but there were plenty of people snowshoeing and a few skiers as well. Will definitely be going back in the summer.

Beautiful views.

For a flatlander struggling with mountain sickness, this was a difficult hike. Steep going up, just take breaks. Regardless of AMS making the hike a lot harder than it should have been, this was a wonderful trip. We did over 4 miles, went past the hut. The views are beautiful. You get the alpine valley with the waterfall and stream and wildflowers in addition to the beautiful surrounding mountains. Windy up top so pack accordingly. Reasonably crowded on a Sunday afternoon, we still had many moments of solitude on the trail. Dogs loved it. Water sources abound with the creeks.

Nice 3-ish mile hike with moderate elevation gain. Easy access right off 40 for a nice break before or after hitting up winter park. Need to go further past the Broome Hut next time to get more views. Will do this one again!

Nice moderate hike. Kept hiking after waterfall to top where it flattens out. Great views.

One of my favorite hikes to-date! Insane views.

What a beautiful hike. Assuming the altitude doesn't get them, great for casual (ish) visitors as it's short enough and has huge payoff on getting above the tree line quick enough for big panoramas. Gets real windy and quite cold up there, be prepared to add 1-2 layers as you ascend.

8/19/17 - nice hike. Had to take several breaks going up but 1000' elevation gain is about tops of my comfort zone. Wildflower season is over I'd say, some lingering asters. Beautiful view at the very top.

Love this trail! Great views of Cirque and Divide the whole way. Interesting rock formations. Steep but worthwhile.

This is a fabulous hike just South of Winter Park. Initially steep, the trail then becomes less difficult. After the Broome hut, continue for spectacular waterfall views and lovely snow fields just below the Continental divide. This is a winner.

Did this last Sunday (7/9). Very pretty hike just south of winter park, about 8 miles or so. You can hear traffic a bit for at least the first part of the trail as the TH is right off 40. There is a pretty stream running to your left very close to the trail with a few paths over to see. The incline is pretty good but if you take your time or keep a steady pace, it's a fairly short distance to the hut at the top (1.5 miles). Views to the right once you reach the but are nice, if you follow the path onwards past the hut there is a nice small, rocky waterfall about 100 yards or so. Overall easy hike, even with the incline. Nice for a quick hike.

Very nice track. Not super challenging but you can stretch it out to add distance and difficulty once you get to the top. Once there, I recommend turning East (right) and climbing the rock summit. The extra 200+ feet of elevation adds quite a bit to the panoramic views.

Such a beautiful trail! It's a bit steep to start off, but levels off closer to the end of the trail. Stunning view at the top of the mountain range. Not too difficult of a hike and wasn't very busy either! Picnic table and bathroom at top of the trail!

Gorgeous trail right off Berthoud Pass, which is the reason I gave it 4 stars. I don't like hearing traffic while hiking, and I heard it for most of the way up and down :( I like the creek and trees here, and the views are incredible! It's an uphill trail, for sure, and even though I've lived here a year and hike multiple times a week, I still got fairly winded and had to stop to catch my breath quite a lot. 11,000 feet is no joke!

I also didn't see a lot of people, but I did head up around 4:00PM. Yes, I know about afternoon storms, but sometimes clouds don't produce thunder and lightening, so I waited to make sure I was safe :) Also, I'll second what another reviewer said: make sure to go behind the Broome Hut and see that stream with waterfalls. Happy hiking!

Really nice hike. Pretty good incline, but short enough to the hut that it wasn’t too bad. Very nice views all along the trail.

Beautiful hike that immediately starts off with a steep climb that is somewhat of a challenge. The hike after Broome Hut is worth continuing on for: lush, green, rolling hills, a winding stream, and patches of snow. Keep climbing up to the twin cones for spectacular views. This last push and the descent is a bit rough and rocky; it was definitely tough on the knees all the way back down to the trailhead. Overall, a great hike. The four-star rating is a matter of preference; I prefer hikes with more forest cover, less rough finishes, and a more gradual start rather than a straight shot uphill.

This just may be my favorite hike out of my 4+ years in Denver! Once you reach the hut, rest, have a snack, and be sure to check out the waterfall just behind it. After you're well rested, continue on the trail (not always well worn). It'll take you to the "alpine meadows," which are beautiful! As soon as I reached it, "Sound of Music" popped into mind (and now won't go away!). A+

Great hike. A difficult trail run but a beautiful hike. Would definitely recommend to go past the hut and up a little further. BEAUTIFUL views and definitely worth it. A little steep and had to go over some snow but getting to the top and seeing the mountain ranges on both sides was breathtaking. About 7 miles round trip if you go to the top (past the hut).
