Directions from Carbondale: From Carbondale travel east on Hwy. 82 to Basalt. Turn left into downtown Basalt and follow the Fryingpan River Road for about 27 miles. Approximately 3 miles past Meredith, turn left on to road #501. About one mile past Elk Wallow Campground take the left fork to the trailhead approximately .2 of a mile before the dead end.

Short and sweet. Very steep in a lot of places. Worth the view though.

short and steep. beautiful hike with all of the wildflowers and spring run off. just a bit rocky and a few downed trees hence the 4 stars.

Still some snow patches. We lost the trail a few times going to the second lake, but eventually found it. Beautiful scenery.

Great trail, bit of a long drive to get to. Starts out going up right away, about 2 hours to 1st lake. Probably one of the prettiest settings in the valley.

Loved this trail, easy enough to do with the kids. Next time I will do the loop & go to Carter Lake from the top. Bring a rain jacket.
