This is always a quick and easy trail to get your blood moving when you don't have time to get to foothills trailheads. Also great if you wish to avoid the crowds at foothills trails. Conditions this morning were great because it was overcast and the ground was still frozen from the night before. No mud or slush, though you could see the foot and tire impressions in the dirt from people trudging through those conditions the day before.

A glorious trail, reminding of the high plains before settlement. Not for open-space agoraphobics. The horizon stretches. The first part is flat, but there are various routes that offer a bit of descent and climbing. Wear that hat and use sunscreen - you are out there with no shade. Take water. Adequate parking, avoid weekend afternoons and the crowds. Be ready for dogs off-leash, but probably very well-behaved. No services at the parking area, not even water. If you pay to go into the Boulder Reservoir area, there are toilets, water and minimal food. Don't go if it rained recently, unless you love mud. You might see coyotes or even foxes. Many birds, including red-tail hawks and eagles (especially February to April). Prarie dogs, of course. Some mountain bikes and horses too.

Attention dog owners: there are TONS of prairie dogs along this trail. Definitely super cool but my dog just wanted to chase after them! Great trail but I would only bring your dog if you know she won’t run after small mammals!

Love this trail. Perfect moderate run, I've hit it from all angles and just really enjoy it. Simple! Full sun, muddy, there can be snakes, otherwise dusty, and great view of the birds and notorious Nipple towards Longmont.

There are two main trailheads to access the Sage Loop - the easternmost lot has more room for parking (the best choice for RVers) and only trash cans; the westernmost lot is smaller, but has both trash cans and a pit toilet open for the mud season. The trail is fairly flat, with almost no shade, and is very easy to follow. Expect: pedestrians, runners, cyclists, dogs (off and on leash), and equestrians (who, for better or worse, are known for going at a full gallop around blind spots on this trail, endangering pedestrians. Keep your ears open for the grunting of a running horse approaching, and step off the trail to yield). Expect also high winds blowing in from the foothills, and the dust that they may carry.

This is great loop for running, even better, you can string it together by starting at Wonderland lake and taking the Foothills Trail over to Eagle, then take Eagle out to 55th(the Boulder Reservoir road) head south to Jay rd. and then west through the NoBo Neighborhoods back to Wonderland Lake. I think it's like 12 - 13 ish miles.

Note: the location of the Eagle Trailhead is actually on the west side of Boulder Reservoir on 51st/55th Street. GPS coordinates: 40.080219, -105.235628 Moderate trail without much elevation gain and great views of the foothills.

Decent walking trail. Portion of trail takes you through cow pasture. Lots of dog, horse and cow poop on trail. EASY walk if you just want to stretch your legs.

I rode this trail 20 years ago with my brother and from what I remember, this was a fairly easy mountain bike ride in a more brushy and dusty area. Short for mountain biking but it was in decent shape back then.
