Beautiful area, but this trail is about average and mostly uphill going from Beaver Lake toward the Centennial lift. It goes over several ski slopes. Re scenery, it joins the Beaver Lake and Overlook trails, which are both much more scenic. Btw, the gondola was not running today, so you can't depend on that if you come up the Beaver Lake trail and then go on the Royal Elk trail. Also, the road that Alltrails directs you on toward the trailhead had a gate that required a code to get in.

Took this in reverse, started from Beaver Creek Lake trail. More up in this direction but easier on the knees! Views are amazing! Got a nice workout in but would not call it hard or strenuous. Some hikers I passed coming from the gondola said they saw a bear. I did not, but it reminds you to keep an eye out. Hike with bear spray just in case! Overall great hike from Beaver Creek Lake then Royal Elk then the gondola down! Amazing views at the Spruce Saddle Lodge. You can have lunch and a beer with a view you worked for!

Nice Hike and beautiful. I was unaware though that Royal Elk Trail was pretty much walking along a cliff edge for a portion of the trail. Nice to know if your afraid of heights. Got through it though. Just watch your step in places.

Lots of up and down across ski slopes with a tiny bit of exposure- lots of fun! We walked up beaver lake trail and took this one to the gondola to ride down (free for the down ride). Got to hang out in spruce lodge while the lightening storm passed. Definitely enjoyed this one over beaver lake trail- more views with less people.

We hiked the trail up then took the Elk trail to catch the lift down. The trail is in excellent condition, but it a fairly steep and steady climb. The best views were on the Elk trail.

We LOVED this trail. We took “dial a ride” (free shuttle service around Beaver Creek) to the Beaver Lake trail trailhead. It took about 1.5 hours to get to the gorgeous lake. (I recommend skipping the 5 senses trail and using the shuttle instead - that trail is a really difficult mile mostly on/near a road so it’s not that great.) Then we backtracked just a little bit to the Royal Elk trail. It took us close to 2 hours to get to Spruce Saddle but we were being pretty leisurely and enjoying the amazing views. Royal Elk goes up and down with a lot of flat parts in between. It crosses over several ski slopes and then goes through forests in between - so it was a perfect combo of shade and sun, forest and open areas. I liked this part of our hike better than Beaver Lake. We had an amazing lunch at Spruce Saddle and then took the gondola down (for free! You need a $42 ticket if you take the ski lift up but “downloading” is free.) We left the village at 9 am and were back at 2:30, including admiring the lake, lunch, downloading, etc. You could definitely do it faster if you wanted but we were in no rush-just wanted to get to cookie time in the village at 3 pm! Enjoy.

Stunning views. Moderate trail, difficult to find footing at some points but good overall. It was fun to spot places we've skied in winter. We love the sound of the Beaver Creek that you can hear for about half of the trail.

This was a great hike! It’s worth noting, like the other reviewers have mentioned, that Royal Elk Trail starts near the top of the gondola. We had a 6 and 9 year old with us and taking a ride up was a must. The gondola rides are $39/adult to go up, but if you walk the trails up leading to Royal Elk Trail, it is free to take the gondola down (5pm is the last ride down). Once you’re on the trail, you’re basically crossing the ridges horizontally until the very last portion of the trail where you take beaver lake trail up to beaver lake. Very scenic, lots of beautiful vegetation this time of year. The lake was beautiful and we actually took a dip!

We hiked up from Beaver Creek to the lake then backtracked to this trail and over to the gondola for a free ride down. It is absolutely breathtaking. There are so many wildflowers and scenic views. If you are coming from a much lower elevation (we came up from Tulsa, OK) I would recommend waiting a few days to adjust to the elevation before jumping onto this trail. It’s doable regardless, but breathing is also fun.

This was a very scenic hike! You are in the wilderness a large portion of the time, and moments you are not, you get to see large ski runs that have been carved down the mountain. When you are in the middle of the ski runs you can see for miles! The path is narrow and my group had to hike single file, but it was still an absolutely wonderful experience! I recommend hiking up the mountain and taking this trail towards to gondolas to go back down and save your knees! The last 10 minutes portion of the hike was a bit grueling in the sun so I recommend starting early! Happy hiking!

Great hike. If you want a harder hike and not repeat a section take Ally’s trail to Beaver Lake Trail to the lake then come back and take Royal Elk to either gondola down or walk down to village. Close to 10 miles and all up hill great hike!

Best trail on the mountain. Technical, streams, trees, up and down, not too strenuous and great views of all of BC. Newbies, take the lift up , find trail just down from gondola, and get started. Ends at trail up to braver lake ( shout uphill hike). Have fun.
