First part of the trail is fun and in the canyon, but the second part of the trail is all uphill and there’s no shade.

I agree clockwise is the way to go. From parking lot follow ohv trail -slick rock to the trail head. The return trip has small patches of shade and a canyon breeze which was refreshing. There is no water, we started mid morning on a clear day mid June. I would not recommend starting later in the day, as most of the trail is not shaded. Take extra water for dogs.

Nice trailhead, parking. No hiking signage, all about ATVing. I did the hike clockwise. I think that worked best. The first half is then on the ATV road to the left (East) of the trailhead. It's 2 miles on the ATV road till you get on an actual trail at the base of the canyon. 2 stars for that leg, nice views, but your walking on a ATV road with ATVs. The trail up the canyon was wonderful. Solid 4 stars. A bit rugged with beautiful views and scenery.

Nice Hike and beautiful down in the canyon. Not so much fun coming out it’s rock and sand and no shade all up hill. But, we enjoyed it.

I would call this a little more than moderate. First half involves some tricky downclimbing in a narrow and breathtaking canyon. The second half is a steady hike up slab by rock used by OTV and 4x4s. Great experience for sure!

Very rocky but absolutely beautiful! Amazing views throughout. Last few miles was all up hill. Dog loved the little bit of water we found.

Exceeded expectations! Definitely go counter clockwise.

Going down Rough Canyon was so much fun! Lots of cool scenery and small rock descending. Going back up Tabeguache OVA road, not so much. Steep, no shade at all, not nearly the same scenery. Next time I will probably just go back up Rough Canyon. It was beautiful and so much fun.

Agree with previous reviews, go clockwise and stick to the bottom of the canyon. Mostly rock hopping in the canyon, no hard scrambles.

Great trail! Lots of scrambling, but wonderful views. We started in the canyon and ended on the Jeep trail, and I would recommend doing it the other way. Scrambling uphill and going down the Jeep trail instead of up. We did it with two dogs and it was great!

Not marked well at all... if you find yourself climbing up the side of the canyon, go back down... the trail is at the bottom ;) also, definitely go down the Jeep trail first and out the canyon!! Not much water in the pools now, but still so pretty and a fun trail. There are a lot of large rocks to climb over, not just a dirt trail. Enjoy!!

So beautiful! Very rocky and happy I had shoes with good traction. Description says heavily trafficked but only saw 2 other people on a Friday afternoon. Would recommend doing in the morning during summer due to limited shade, but great afternoon hike for spring.

4.7 miles, 3.5 hours with two dogs, taking our time and enjoying the scenery. If you’re doing the loop, I HIGHLY recommend going clockwise, starting on the Jeep trail to the left, then circling back through the canyon, as there is some very minor scrambling, and the canyon is more shaded later in the day. Hiked April 9, there were quite a few puddles and a small stream at times (in the canyon) for the dogs to drink and cool off in.

Will definitely find a different way back. Hadn’t paid enough attention to realize that return was by OHV Tabeguache Trail. Will have easily been 4 stars for a there and back on Rough Canyon hiking trail.
