Red Mountain Trail is a 6.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Grand Lake, Colorado that features a waterfall and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, birding, horses, and backpacking and is best used from May until October. Horses are also able to use this trail.

I used this trail on 8/11 and 8/12 for a backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park. This is the most direct route from the Colorado River Trailhead parking lot to the Valley View back country camp site. From the parking lot, follow the Colorado River Trail 0.5 miles to the Red Mountain Trail head. From this point, you will gain over 1,000' elevation over the next 2.8 miles over several creeks, rock piles, woods, small meadows, etc. There are several spots with epic views of the Kawuneeche Valley south towards Grand Lake and north towards the Colorado River head waters. The trail connects to the Grand Ditch Trail which also offers incredible views of the valley below.
